We uncovered Seawind after 7 months of sitting in a field awaiting our return, redesigned and built an exhaust system on our Bukh DV20, lapped a thru hull and greased the others, made some improvements to our galley and so much more. Today is splash day! A term often used to describe the date of which a vessel is to be launched into the water, to float and operate as the owner expects (and hopes). This is also a day of anticipation and boy are we full of it! Any boat owner knows that preventative maintenance can be the line between life and death. Our aim is to continue keeping our sailboat in good working order so we can continue living and adventuring on her happily and safely! Will all of our work in preparation for this date pay off? The Dorothy, built in 1897, has never been fully reefed or re-caulked, which is the process of pounding cotton and oakum between the seams of a wooden sailboat's planks. Shipwright and artist Tony Grove explains the process of reefing - pulling out the cotton material - out without damaging the boat's 130-year-old delicate cedar planks. Dorothy is considered to be the oldest functioning sailboat in Canada, and is set to return to the water in May 2023, for the first time in 20+ years! She is owned by the Maritime Museum of BC, and will sail as a live vessel and an elegant ambassador for heritage boats built on the Pacific Northwest Coast.
