And it's true, maintenance is an inseparable part of cruising life. Learning to maintain your boat is as important as learning to sail it but don't let that put you off. Our boat was a fixer-upper when we set off to travel world by sea in 2017. We had no idea really how much work that was still left to do on the boat and even less about how to fix it. Although I'm pretty handy with the power tools with a background in furniture making, I had no mechanical or engineering qualifications whatsoever and again even though we had a sailing school I had no idea how to maintain the bigger cruising boats. And to be honest I'd much prefer to be having a cold beer in a beach bar rather than taking engines apart. So over the last four years, 12 000 sea miles and four continents I've had to learn how to maintain and repair the boat while living on board with the family and I have to do it because it keeps our dream alive on a very tight budget. I've learned by reading countless blogs, watching hours of youtube footage and listening to old salty sea dogs and experts. And okay admittedly i do have to call in a professional now and again to do jobs which are way beyond my pay grade. But if i do that, i always make sure that i ask loads of questions and film it so i know how to do that job for myself in the future. So this channel is really for all you want to be sailors or newbies who want to see firsthand what can go right and wrong with DIY boat maintenance. Rigging, outboards, solar, engines, water makers, pumps, furlers, sails, electronics and much more, everything I've had to do on the fly to keep this boat sailing, using the tools resources and know-how that i had at the time whether at anchor or in the boat yard and often with a lot of improvisation. And i don't get everything right either. But i'm hoping these videos will show the reality behind the scenes and to give some balance to the lifestyle videos you often find on youtube. Die Fahrt nach Cherbourg Anfang Juli hätte richtig entspannt werden können, wenn wir uns nicht eine Leine einer Fischerboje oder vielmehr eines Fischerfenders in den Propeller gefahren hätten. So mussten wir mitten im Ärmelkanal zum Propeller tauchen und versuchen, die Leine zu entfernen. Aber schaut selbst und seid wieder mit an Bord und nimmt teil an unseren Erlebnissen. Vorderleine und Achterleine, Vorderspring und Achterspring. Segel setzen: Fock, Groß, Parasailor. Anker ausbringen und einholen und vor allem vorbereiten. Es darf auch gerne ein anderer Anker sein als der der von Lagoon serienmäßig mitgeliefert wird. Und was ist alles zu bedenken, wenn durch systematische Pflege der neuwertige Standard des Schiffes möglichst lange erhalten bleiben soll. ▬ Über diesen Kanal ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Wir sind Brigitta und Hannes. Wir wollen gemeinsam um die Welt segeln. Dafür haben wir uns einen Katamaran gekauft mit dem wir Anfang März von der französischen Atlantikküste auf die Barfußroute starten wollen. Seit vielen Jahren war eine Weltumsegelung mein (Hannes) großer Traum, den ich berufsbedingt zum Renteneintrittsalter verwirklichen wollte. Manchmal kommt das Leben aber anders als man plant. Im Frühjahr diesen Jahres erhielt ich die Diagnose Morbus Parkinson. Plötzlich beschleunigte sich mein Leben erheblich, ich verkaufte mein Haus, löste den Hausrat auf und begann Berge an Schiffsausrüstung anzuschaffen. „Leinen los!“ war für Anfang März geplant – und so kam es auch, trotz Corona. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Plan International ist ein internationales Kinderhilfswerk. Auf unserer Reise wollen wir nicht nur in Traumbuchten chillen sondern Programmländer von Plan besuchen und die dortige Arbeit dokumentieren.
