I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
Join authors Dr. Timothy Walker, Dr. Cheryl LaRoche, and National Park Service Ranger Shawn Quigley for a virtual presentation about the new book, Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad. In December of 1849 15-year-old Elizabeth Blakeley successfully escaped enslavement in Wilmington, North Carolina by hiding on a ship bound for Boston. By the mid-19th century, her method of escape was so common that Southern port authorities took extraordinary measures to try to stop it. Though modern Underground Railroad scholarship focuses almost exclusively on overland routes, new research demonstrates that large numbers of enslaved individuals gained their freedom by sea aboard coastal vessels bound for Northern ports. Almost all successful escapes from the deep south were achieved by sea. In the new book Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad, ten historians explore the less-understood maritime side of the Underground Railroad, including the impact of African Americans' paid and unpaid waterfront labor. About the Speakers Dr. Cheryl LaRoche is an Associate Professor in Historic Preservation at UMD. Her first book, Free Black Communities and the Underground Railroad: The Geography of Resistance, was published in 2014 by the University of Illinois Press. Dr. Timothy Walker, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, is a scholar of maritime history, colonial overseas expansion, and trans-oceanic slave trading. Walker is a guest investigator of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a contributing faculty member of the Munson Institute of Maritime Studies, and Director of the NEH “Landmarks in American History” workshops series, titled “Sailing to Freedom: New Bedford and the Underground Railroad” (2011–2021). Shawn Quigley has been park guide for the National Park Service at the National Parks of Boston since 2012. He has spent most of his professional career exploring the history of Boston’s free African American community in the 19th century and its role in the abolition movement and the fight for civil rights.

Today's video is actually the culmination of three weeks of work and bad language. The bookcase was originally two shelves with a fitted radio above. The previous owner told me he'd considered removing the radio to gain another shelf but never gotten around to it. I decided that sounded like a great idea as one can never have too much storage. I regretted it from the moment I started work on it!! However, now it's finished I'm glad I did it but lord it took a long time, and made so much mess! On next week's video I'll be fitting a new blind, building a desk to work at, and filling the bookcase :)

75 days after leaving the dock to isolate afloat away from Covid our provisions were holding out but our watermaker needed attention so we sail to Karen’s home town of Airlie Beach and take a berth in a marina for the first time since heading to sea. The Coral Sea Marina is well known as the priciest on the Queensland Coast but is it value for money or just a rip off. We give our opinion. In Airlie Beach Karen introduces Rob to some of the adventure grounds of her high school years with walks to a favourite swimming hole and one of the Whitsunday’s most spectacular lookouts. Make sure you watch to the end where in ‘Our Galley’ Karen provides a quick tip on how she keeps coming up with tasty treats long after fresh supplies are gone. All music by Epidemic Sound. Dave and Patrica get rescheduled to sail on the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa. They were able to get two of the limited number of ELISSA day sail spots on board as a sail training student. As a sail training student, participants will experience what life was like as a 19th-century sailor. The program includes both hands-on and lecture learning, focusing on setting sails and maneuvering the 144-year-old ship through the Gulf of Mexico. Come with us on this journey through the past and experience a piece of history. Galveston Historical Foundation brought ELISSA, an 1877 square-rigged iron barque, from a scrap yard in Piraeus Harbor, Greece to Galveston to begin restoration work in 1978. By 1982, GHF staff and volunteers completed restoration and transformed this rare, historic vessel into a floating museum that would actively sail. Today, ELISSA is one of only three ships of her kind in the world to still actively sail and welcomes over 40,000 visitors annually. She also serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s historic beginnings as a sea port and active waterfront. https://www.galvestonhistory.org/ https://www.facebook.com/galvestonhistory/ Elissa was built in Aberdeen, Scotland as a merchant vessel in a time when steamships were overtaking sailing ships. She was launched on October 27, 1877. The vessel was named for the niece of Henry Fowler Watt, Elissa's first owner,[3] though according to his descendants the ship was named for the Queen of Carthage, Elissa (more commonly called Dido), Aeneas' tragic lover in the epic poem The Aeneid. Elissa also sailed under Norwegian and Swedish flags. In Norway she was known as the Fjeld of Tønsberg and her master was Captain Herman Andersen. In Sweden her name was Gustav of Gothenburg. In 1918, she was converted into a two-masted brigantine and an engine was installed. She was sold to Finland in 1930 (owned by Gustaf Erikson to 1942) and reconverted into a schooner. In 1959, she was sold to Greece, and successively sailed under the names Christophoros, in 1967 as Achaeos, and in 1969 as Pioneer. In 1970, she was rescued from destruction in Piraeus after being purchased for the San Francisco Maritime Museum. However, she languished in a salvage yard in Piraeus until she was purchased for $40,000, in 1975, by the Galveston Historical Foundation, her current owners.[4] In 1979, after a year in Greece having repairs done to her hull, Elissa was first towed to Gibraltar. There, she was prepared for an ocean tow by Captain Jim Currie of the New Orleans surveyors J.K. Tynan International. The restoration process continued until she was ready for tow on June 7, 1979. Elissa has an iron hull, and the pin rail and bright work is made of teak. Her masts are Douglas fir from Oregon, and her 19 sails were made in Maine. She has survived numerous modifications including installation of an engine, and the incremental removal of all her rigging and masts.
