🇳🇿🇺🇸 // Day 2 was a proper test on the nerves for Team MSIG Europe, forcing our first emergency op out on the foredeck. As a heavy squall hit, we had to furl the J2 under massive load. The line couldn't take the extreme strain and let go, locking up the drum. It took a long, brutal, and fully committed effort to get it sorted, but a clever Dyneema lash got us back on track and reliable. Situation’s back under control, the rig is intact, and MSIG Europe is back to 100%! We do love a happy ending… and a quick pit stop treat. Our dinghy died miles from our sailboat as darkness closed in and a massive lightning storm rolled toward us. Then our hair began standing straight up—the terrifying warning that lightning could strike at any moment. What was supposed to be a simple family sailing trip from Miami to Key Largo for key lime pie quickly became one of the scariest nights we’ve experienced on the water. The day began perfectly. We left Miami early, spotted dolphins, and motored across a glassy ocean toward the Florida Keys. Our only real plan was to anchor in Key Largo, explore town, and find the best key lime pie we could. But boat life had other plans. After finally getting our unreliable dinghy started, we crossed some questionable water, found a dinghy dock, and walked to the Key Lime Pie Factory. When we returned, the dinghy engine wouldn’t start. We spent over an hour troubleshooting it, but nothing worked. With darkness approaching and lightning flashing around us, we had only one option: paddle all the way back to our catamaran. At first, everyone was laughing and making jokes. But as the wind picked up, the waves grew, our phones began dying, and the boat still looked impossibly far away, the mood changed. Then Malia’s hair started standing straight up—one of the warning signs of an imminent lightning strike. We were exhausted, scared, and completely exposed on the water. More than an hour later, we finally reached our sailboat safely…only to discover that our generator had stopped working. By morning, our watermaker had failed too, leaving our family without running water or flushing toilets. Just another peaceful day of living on a boat. 😂 But this episode isn’t all boat problems and terrifying storms. We enjoy our first family sunset dinner on the flybridge, sail through the Gulf Stream, and watch the boys catch a beautiful bonita—and then hook into the biggest fish they’ve ever fought! We finish the adventure back in Miami, where we dress up for one final night with Malia and Hayden before their early flight to Boise. Saying goodbye to our daughter was harder than we expected. It’s one thing for her to leave for college. It’s another knowing that we’re the ones sailing away and will soon be in another country. This episode captures everything about full-time family sailing: incredible beauty, complete chaos, broken boat systems, deep-sea fishing, terrifying weather, and the family moments that make every struggle worth it. In this video, we step aboard the Marcopolo MP12, an all-new Italian adventure yacht that combines a distinctive explorer-inspired design with the performance and versatility of an outboard-powered cruiser. At 12.7 metres long and just over 4 metres wide, the MP12 makes impressive use of its dimensions. Its broad, flared bow creates a huge amount of usable space forward, while the modular aft layout can be configured around either entertaining or relaxing on the water. Fold-down bulwarks further open up the aft deck, creating an unusually spacious connection with the sea. Performance is also a key part of the MP12's character. Its three-step hull was developed using CFD to provide stability and balance at speed, while the boat can accommodate up to three 450hp outboards. The enclosed hardtop and cruiser layout also make the MP12 a genuinely versatile boat, designed to move between open-air day boating and more comfortable overnight cruising. Below deck, the MP12 offers two cabins and four berths, alongside a bathroom with a separate shower. The interior combines natural wood, technical materials and automotive-inspired Dinamica upholstery to create a surprisingly refined environment for a boat with such a strong adventure focus. With the weather finally on our side, we leave Cairns behind and make our way out to Vlasoff Cay… A stunning sand cay rising from crystal-clear water, surrounded by beautiful coral and reef stretching out as far as the eye can see. But the real highlight of our reef adventure was something I never expected… I jumped into that crystal-clear water and found myself swimming alongside a group of batfish. This interview connects with Matt on the day that he left St John's, Newfoundland, bound for Aasiaat in Greenland where he will begin his quest to circumnavigate the Arctic solo and non stop. He expects to cover the 10,000 miles in around 90 days if everything goes perfectly. He has crammed 1,600 litres of fuel onto his Valiant 42 and will sail across the North Atlantic, passing north of Iceland and Norway, before he enters Russian waters. He, like Elle Hibberd and fellow OCC member, Harry Anderson, have succeeded in receiving the necessary permission to attempt the North East Passage without a Russian Pilot on board. Once he crosses the border into Russia his Starlink terminal and GPS will stop working leaving Matt without access to detailed satellite imagery to help him navigate the ice strewn waters. Instead Matt will have to rely on the Iridium network to stay in touch and access weather and ice information. We terminated the interview a little early due to poor audio quality but we will make every effort to catch up with him again when he is under way. Matt's sailing credentials are extraordinary. He became the first person to circumnavigate the Americas non-stop in a 309 day solo voyage through the North West Passage and around Cape Horn. He now runs an expedition yacht supporting scientists studying climate change. He does this through his non-profit organisation and is currently raising money to buy a new engine for his research yacht. We lucked out! It seems the docks on the Islands are still pretty full, even after Labour Day. We expected to maybe cruise around and find nothing for the weekend, which would have kept us at the dock. I noticed that some friends were out, so I texted them and asked where they were and if there was a spot. They replied that they were on an Island, there were no extra spaces....BUT...they were leaving Saturday morning so if we got there around 10:00 am, we could swap spots! Tremendous! It was really windy and gusty by the time we left the marina on Saturday morning, but we got to Grenadier Island in plenty of time, swapped out the spots, and started to get settled. Some other friends contacted us, and we let them know that there was a free spot for their boat. So a great weekend was had with good friends! Chloe was the Star of the Show, and the weekend. She was constantly sniffing, tracking, and chasing any critter she could see. It was so much fun to see her so serious and alert as a Hunter! She caught nothing, by the way. On Sunday, heading back to the marina, we stopped into Huck's Marina for a fuel-up and pump-out. What a beautiful facility and really helpful staff! As the bad weather starts coming in, it's more important for us to take advantage of every weekend on the boat!
