One of the strangest year ever, No Guests, and less crew without any social events and gatherings. This year,( the never thought off 2020), I have been blessed as one of the few to be chosen to work and be able to provide and support for my family. The Pandemic is not over and many obstacles,small or big will cross our paths before we can sit down and think of the Covid19 as a past adventure. 2020 gave me a different perspective in life, to be humble, to be patient, to believe in the Lord Almighty, lastly whatever happens in your life your family is your number one supporter, without them i will never survive the stress of this pandemic. We leave Yelapa, and set sail for tehuamixtle. Along the way the engine dies which made us a little nervous as there was no wind to get us going anywhere. We ended up backtracking a bit on our route. Finally Trav figured out what the problem was.... WE RAN OUT OF FUEL!! At least this time it wasn't our own stupidity.. the gas gauge was broken and no longer telling us the correct amount that we had. Luckily he got it going again without tooooo much of a hassle and we were on our way again. We saw sooo many turtles along the way. We couldn't believe how many were swimming right by us. Usually we just get dolphins but this was a nice change to the scenery! Clearly Trav loves them he spent all day watching and filming them. hahaha Once we arrived we were pleasantly surprised and how insanely clear the water was! It was so beautiful. After our 3 day and night crossing of the Bay of Biscay, we anchored in Ensenada de Mera. It is just across from A Coruña. A lovely anchorage in the sunny warm weather of Spain. The water was very clear compared to the Netherlands and enticed me daily for a dip. A bit on the cool side but quite refreshing. Of course, we wanted to explore with Hermann (our dinghy) so we needed to get him put in the water with the outboard motor. The very nice and secure lock had other ideas. Our friends Kim and Vin from SV Heron arrived a few days later and the party began. First a beach party with other sailors from the anchorage. Then Heron gave a salsa dancing workshop in the park overlooking the bay. A good time was had by all. Extra footage provided by Heron. Music by Troy and Paula Haag.

Начало августа. Мальчишки купили катерки на пульте управления , но запускать их можно только в пресной воде. Я увидела на карте два озера. И мы решили съездить к ним. Заодно посмотрим горы. Это Место называется Cuber. А это оказались не озера, а водохранилища. Там не то что купаться нельзя. А даже не подойти близко. Времени почитать совсем небыло. Дорога узкая, машин мало. Но обгонять сложно. Есть даже туннель. Виды открываются волшебные. Все снять не успела. Думала поснимаю на обратном пути... Мы пойдем по круговому маршруту. Я планировала что мы обойдем гору за 5 часов. Дистанция около 10 км. Но времени у нас было более 7 часов. Уже это препятствие должно было натолкнуть меня на мысль, что мы идём не туда. В окрестностях алькудии я часто встречала такие огрожления. Их строят от местных коз и овец. Но мы пошли дальше. Тем временем мы начали спускаться к хостелу Tossals Verds. Этот хостел для туристов, является одним из самых символичных зданий по маршруту 221. Здание находится на высоте 525 м, недалеко от небольшого фруктового сада и огорода и в непосредственной близости от старой дороги из Аларо в Альмаллутх. Но сейчас все полность закрыто. За столиками обедало несколько человек, но видимо это их ланч, который они взяли с собой. Real sailing day (one of those with sun and wind) Departure: 09.30 Arrival: 15.30 Distance: 38 miles (ish) Weather: Lots of sun, a cloud here and there, 19 degrees Wind: SW- 5-20 kts We left in a still somewhat moderate wind and headed for the 2nd part of the long bridge which is 32 metres high (the first passage is 18 metres clearance, but that is no longer possible now that we are sailing the WJ: 22.40 metres high) We hoist all sails and do about 4 knots of speed. No speedboat speeds, but t is a fine day. We spot a porpoise (unfortunately it did not allow itself to be photographed this time) An hour after the bridge, we sail a bit wider and the wind picks up a bit according to the forecast and not long after, we make more speed and once the island is behind us we end up reaching speeds of 9-10 knots. So things are going well. We eat bacon pancakes and are in contact with the Welvaeren. They are in the harbour and tell us there is a regatta going on, so we shouldn't count on a place in the harbour. We see the crowds cross the finish line on arrival and anchor the WJ comfortably (a slightly rocky spot despite being right under the coast). After a lift/snack dinner, we put the T/T in the water. We then have a little more certainty that the WJ will stay at anchor. Ro and Pat sail into port for coffee aboard the Welvaeren. Rob stays on board as anchor watch. The rest of the evening brought another beautiful sunset #ballen #danmark #sialing

In this short clip, Charles “Butch” Ulmer talks about his first Newport to Bermuda Race. He took part in this race as a second-year student at the US Naval Academy in 1958 onboard a wooden Navy yawl. At the start of the race a 58-knot puff came through and tore up the fleet. “Two minutes into the race we had blown out a spinnaker, broken the spinnaker pole and two put holes in the deck,” said Ulmer. Now that is trial by fire for a first ocean race. Lucky for him, he didn’t know any other way of doing the race. The crew were prepared with all the right damage control tools and parts, which allowed them to finish the race. One more example of the proverbial "Iron me in wooden ships". The 1958 Bermuda Race was won by the 38-foot S&S designed yawl FINISTERRE owned by Carlton Mitchell, who sailed FINISTERRE to three Newport to Bermuda wins in a row during the years 1956, 1958 and 1960.
