Les premiers concurrents sont attendus à la fin du mois de mars 2015. Les bateaux parcourent 23 000 milles nautiques lors d'une circumnavigation de Barcelone à Barcelone, en laissant les caps de Bonne Espérance (Afrique du Sud), Leeuwin (Australie) et Horn (Chili) à bâbord (leur gauche) et l'Antarctique à tribord (leur droite). Pendant les trois mois de course, les skippers tracent leurs routes au milieu de 12 zones climatiques et traversent trois océans, en plus d'une navigation dans la mer Méditerranée. Les équipages naviguent sur des IMOCA 60 de 18,28 mètres de long. Leurs mâts peuvent atteindre une hauteur maximum de 29 mètres, soit la hauteur d'un immeuble de dix étages.
