As you know, I am a keen dinghy racer, usually racing two or three times a week year round. So I was happy to give something back when my club, Torpoint Mosquito SC, https://www.tmsc.org.uk/ asked me to be race officer for their inaugural Solo open meeting. https://www.solosailing.org.uk/ Even for a small event (18 racers in this case) there's always a lot of organisation. This time there were 11 club members involved, some manning the safety and mark laying boats, others on shore accepting entries and calculating the results. And then three of us on the committee boat, as fortunately I was being ably assisted by Emma and Doug. For it needs at least three people to start and, especially, to finish a race. It's common for boats to finish overlapped, and even the tail enders need to have their positions accurately recorded. Then results have to be calculated allowing for 1, sometimes 2 discards. Fortunately, although the wind went round 180 deg after setting out the first course and laying buoys ( the mark laying crew had a real workout on what was the hottest day of the year) it then stayed fairly consistent and we managed to run three windward leeward races, each lasting 40 minutes. Although this video starts with a start and ends with a finish the clips are in random order from a fixed point as the camera was actually being used to record the starts and finishes. And as always with my short videos there's no audio. So no irritating music or wind noise

As we continue this series on the Sailboat Commissioning of this brand new Catalina 445 Sailing Yacht, it's important to properly commission your boat to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. In this video, we'll walk you through the steps of stepping your mast. The mast is crucial to the safety and operation of any sailboat. Ted Weyhrauch from Innovative Marine is in charge of this critical component. At this stage all the equipment that goes on the mast, the shrouds, spredders, electronics, halyards and stays have been attached to the mast. Now comes the critical process of stepping the mast. Stepping the mast is one of the most dangerous activities in the commissioning process as you are picking up the mast with a crane, navigating the mast through other boats, cars and people and setting it on deck to perfectly match the deck base while at the same time running wiring through the mast and deck and attaching the standing rig. So you will see the entire process of stepping the mast and a few extras. You will see it is not as simple as folks would make you believe. Voilà notre première participation à la régate une Femme un Homme Organisé par le SNPH du Havre Enfin, nous sommes partis sans prétention et heureusement, car nous avons pris un départ catastrophique et après la bouée de dégagement, juste après la pointe de Saint Adresse nous somme stoppé par un manque de vent. Le comité de course à réduit le parcourt, mais nous avons tellement de retard et avec ce peu de vent Oxten peine a avancer. Nous ne finirons pas la régate, mais par contre nous sommes à l'heure au club pour l'apéro. En-tout-cas merci au club SNPH pour l'organisation et aux participants. Très sympas de se retrouver tous autour d'un verre, rien que pour ça, nous avons bien envie de revenir l'année prochaine pour au moins essayer de terminer le parcours.

Em dezembro de 2024 a organização da tradicional Regata da Marinha em São Francisco do Sul foi transferida para o dia 25 de janeiro de 2025 em virtude do mau tempo com fortes chuvas em toda região norte Catarinense. Neste dia o sol brilhou e o vento leste a nordeste esteve presente com 7 a 10 nós, mas um temporal de verão entrou no meio da prova trazendo chuvas e parou o vento por alguns momentos. Depois retornou e os participantes conseguiram concluir o percurso, que para nós foi de 5.5 milhas náuticas, já às outras classes fizeram duas voltas o que pode ter sido de 10 a 12 milhas náuticas dependendo do rumo de cada barco. Em nossa classe Veleiros de Oceano participamos na categoria Bico de Proa. Nosso barco é um clássico de madeira de 1985 com quilha tipo patilhao com calado de 0,60 cm, isso faz com que a navegação contra o vento e maré seja diferente dos barcos de quilha maior que navegam em um ângulo mais favorável, mas isso não nos desanima e participamos mesmo sabendo que será muito difícil chegar entre os primeiros colocados. E apesar desta característica do barco e ficando em 4 lugar e último nessa etapa, no ranking geral de 2024 conseguimos finalizar em terceiro lugar!!! Para mim é gratificante estar entre os melhores do ranking pois premia a nossa consistência em estar sempre na raia, com chuva, sem vento ou muito vento, as vezes sem conseguir completar a prova, o desafio é que me empolga, as dificuldades que me tornam mais paciente, com mais atenção, mais esperto aos detalhes que envolvem uma regata. We keep multiple boat hooks onboard “Moments in Time”. We have an extending hook in the forward locker, a special line threading hook forward as well, mostly for catching mooring balls. However, the boat hook located in the stern barely reaches the waterline. This is the hook that will most likely be used in emergencies as it is the most accessible from the cockpit. I decided to replace 6-foot hook with a 14-foot floating telescoping boat hook, This will extend the reach quite a bit and increases the safety factor if something needs to be retrieved from the water.
