La nostra povera Y2K aveva decisamente bisogno di amore, così ci siamo rimboccati le maniche. Tra la rimozione dei vecchi adesivi a caldo e la tanto odiata carteggiatura, fortunatamente Alex (il nostro mago del refit) ci ha dato una grossa mano, portando lo scafo a specchio senza fare un filo di polvere! Nessuna traccia di osmosi grave, solo un paio di bollicine sistemate con resina epossidica. Siamo stati davvero fortunati a incrociare lui e la sua azienda, Squid & Co: lavora in modo impeccabile ed è un professionista altamente consigliato per chiunque passi da queste parti! Il CPT Max, nel frattempo, non sta certo con le mani in mano: tra la pulizia del teak con un nuovo tool elettrico Ryobi prestato proprio da Alex, lo smontaggio dell'elica di prua e la revisione totale della pompa ad alta pressione del dissalatore ZP, il lavoro non manca. Ma la vera doccia fredda è arrivata dalla fabbrica di galvanizzazione: i primi 30 metri della nostra catena dell'ancora sono irrecuperabili. Cosa conviene fare in questi casi in Australia? Last weekend saw Round 6 of the RS21 UK & Ireland Cup hosted by Rutland Sailing Club, where sailors were greeted with sunshine and strong winds across both days of racing. Saturday’s racing kicked off with a steady 20 knots across flat water, which made for tight mark rounding's and close competition throughout the fleet. As the day went on, races 3 and 4 brought slightly lighter yet gusty winds, turning the course into a game of snakes and ladders. The day wrapped up with the class’s signature pontoon drinks, followed by their AGM and a three-course dinner at the club. On Sunday, sailors reunited for breakfast before heading back out for another sunny day of super-close racing. With four races sailed in 15-knot conditions, the action was as tight as ever. At one point, six boats were overlapped at a single leeward gate! After an exhilarating day on the water, the weekend concluded with their prize giving. The RS21 Class Association would like to thank Rutland Sailing Club for their fantastic race management, hospitality, and participation with their club boats joining the fleet. The collaboration between the RS21 Class and Rutland Sailing Club was a true success. After months of rebuilding and living off the boat, we finally hit a turning point in our sailboat refit… we’re moving back aboard—even though the boat is far from finished. In this episode, we begin the process of putting the boat back together—reinstalling drawers, doors, and interior panels that have been out for what feels like forever. It’s a huge mental shift from teardown to rebuild, and seeing the spaces come back to life is incredibly motivating. At the same time, we made a big (and slightly crazy) decision: 👉 leave our apartment and move back onto the boat full-time. Right now, the boat is still very much a work in progress: No running water No permanent power (just extension cords to shore power) Minimal cooking setup And a 3-minute walk across the yard for the bathroom, showers, dishes… everything We focused on making just two spaces barely livable—our stateroom and the galley. And by “finished,” we mean the essentials: drawers back in, a mattress on the bed, and a place to put our clothes. It’s not comfortable. It’s not convenient. But it feels right. Eliminating the daily commute to the boatyard gives us back time and energy, and being onboard again is already pushing us to work longer, stay focused, and make faster progress toward launch. This is the reality of a liveaboard sailboat refit—messy, inconvenient, and sometimes uncomfortable—but also incredibly rewarding as we get closer to getting back in the water.
