It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Full tour of this £22,000 EX RNLI LIFEBOAT WATSON 41 - ST ANDREW Built by William Osbourne in 1952. The 41 ft Watson non self-righting lifeboat was designed for service at stations which required a larger and more powerful boat than the standard carriage launched types, but which could not accommodate the larger Watson types through boathouse or slipway constraints. With production starting in 1933, this type of lifeboat was put back into production in 1948, nine years after the previous one had been built. The new revised version had an enlarged cabin which replaced the forward shelter. From 1963 eight of the boats, including St Andrew, were re-engined with 47 bhp Ford-based Parsons Porbeagle 4-cylinder diesel engines. The last four 41s to be built, however, were built with one cockpit aft containing the wheel, engine controls, shelter for eight crew and access to the engine room. She served at Whitehills, Girvan and Arklow but, as a new generation of lifeboats were being introduced, St Andrew had 3 spells in the relief fleet lasting in total about 11 years. As the normal life of a lifeboat is 25 years, St Andrew has not had a hard life, the engines being 19 years old when sold out of service, 8 years of that time having been spent in the relief fleet. St Andrew was the last Watson 41 to be built. It is believed she is the only one of her type largely as original, except for changes to her forard cabin and fore peak. She is much admired partly because she is sweet to the eye, having a low profile and very rare funnel that houses the engine exhausts. La misura dello Yacht più grande del mondo oggi è di 183 metri scarsi ma non è di Jeff Bezos. È di Kjell Inge Røkke Il REV di Røkke, è in costruzione e dovrebbe essere consegnato nel 2024 anche se ha già fatto il varo. da Yachtworld: Il REV non è solo lo yacht più grande del mondo grazie ai 9 metri che lo separano dalla concorrenza, ma è anche all’avanguardia dal punto di vista del design e delle specifiche. Grazie alla collaborazione tra l’architetto navale Espen Øino il progettista e armatore Kjell Inge Røkke, garantisce i più alti standard di efficienza del carburante, inquinamento e impatto ambientale; grazie a un sistema di recupero del calore, inceneritori ad alta tecnologia, riduzione del suono e delle vibrazioni, motori elettrici diesel e un sistema di trattenimento delle acque di zavorra, lo yacht è pensato per rispettare il Codice Polare dell’IMO, che richiede che le navi siano in grado di operare autonomamente per 114 giorni in condizioni artiche e antartiche. Progettato sia come nave da ricerca che come nave da spedizione di lusso, ha un’incredibile autonomia di 21.120 miglia nautiche navigando a 11 nodi. Nonostante REV sia già stata varata nel cantiere navale VARD in Romania, saranno necessari ancora circa 8 mesi di lavoro prima che la nave sia pronta per ospitare passeggeri. Jeff Bezos ha uno yacht lungo solo 127 metri Bezos e lo yacht ingombrante: il ponte di Rotterdam dovrà essere smontato per farlo passare Lo yacht di Jeff Bezos è stato costruito da Oceano di Alblasserdam: si tratta di una nave a tre alberi così grande che non riuscirà a passare sotto il ponte di Rotterdam. Il comune, in un primo momento, aveva fatto sapere di aver accettato la richiesta del costruttore navale, di smantellare una parte del ponte, per “semplice pragmatismo”. Questa concessione “riguarda solo il passaggio di una nave con alberi alti attraverso De Hef – e poiché non si può alzare come un ponte levatoio -, l’unica alternativa è togliere la parte centrale”. Oceano e Bezos rimborserebbero comunque i costi. Attualmente lo yacht è in costruzione ad Alblasserdam, vicino a Rotterdam: vale 430 milioni di euro, è alto 40 metri e lungo 127 metri. Supererà anche la Sea Cloud, barca a vela costruita nel 1931 e di proprietà di Yacht Portfolio, una società di investimento con sede a Malta.
