Harken reliability you expect for less than you might expect. It’s one of the best things about sailors: we hate to give up on our equipment. But if you’re like a lot of owners of boats with vintage integral hydraulic backstay units, you’ve been putting up with seepage and slippage for too long. We’ve introduced our new integral hydraulic unit to convince you it’s finally time to pull the pins on that leaker and start anew. Unlike some competitive units, you’ll notice the Harken Single-Acting Integral Backstay Adjuster has no external hydraulic hoses to snag docklines or lazy sheets and come loose. As you pump the handle, the single-acting pump pushes fluid through a hole gun-drilled inside the stainless rod, to top of the cylinder, creating pressure and backstay tension. A simple pressure-release knob releases that pressure, reducing mast bend. All the fluid stays inside the tube all of the time. The new Harken Integral is designed to be bulletproof and need no nursing for years. That pressure-release knob cannot be over-tightened. Turn it clockwise to close, counterclockwise to open. A very analog, very pragmatic position indicator completes the offering — to make duplicating settings fool-proof. There are four unit sizes, appropriate for boats from 9-18 m (30-60 ft). After sailing more than 20 000 nm we decided to haul out Umadum in Carriacou (Grenada). Was it the best place for refitting a catamaran? Now we can say – NO! And you’ll see why. We expected to stay on the yard for about 3 monts, but in turned into a daymare for 6 months. So many projects have done on our performance cruising catamaran: • Fairing the hulls with 2 parts marine epoxy • Spray painting the hulls • Painting decks, cockpit, salon, toilet, one cabin • Repairing one engine • Replacing rudder bearing • Replacing standing rigging • Applying Coppercoat Antifouling • Making new storage shelves • Replacing all the thru-hull fittings • Installing in new Lavac toilet instead of not working Jabsco • Making a new mainsail cover • Making a gallery on the boom to support the mainsail • Replacing anods • Resealing all side hatches • Servicing dinghy outboard engine • And dozens other minor boatworks So you can use this list as the essential sailboat repair checklist. And everything worked in so called GMT time – GRENADA MAYBE TIME. Which means – waiting, waiting, waiting. Waiting for the boat spare parts, waiting for workers to come and work. Finally after 176 days on the boatyard in Carriacou we decided to stop rennovation of our catamaran and launch the boat. Not all painting work on the boat has been completed, but enough is enough. We were very happy with painting the hulls, but 6 months were more than enough for our painter to finish all work. So we decided that we’ll finish the rest of painting by ourselves later. Why? Von den Gambier-Inseln liegt der Point Nemo nochmals 2.000 km Richtung Süden. 2.000 km sind 1.080 nM. Bei einem Etmal von 125 nM könnten wir Point Nemo in 8 ½ Tagen erreichen. Aber keine Sorge uns zieht es auf der Barfußroute weiter gen Westen. Unsere nächste anstehende Etappe bringt uns zurück nach Tahiti. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich.
