Fast, stiff, strong and exciting; the Sydney 36 is a proven and very well respected sailor’s yacht loved by all who take the helm. Straight out of the gate in 2009 Aileron took out first in Hamilton Island Race Week (IRC 2), Geelong Race Week (Div A Cruising) and the Sydney to Gold Coast (IRC 4). There is still a lot to be impressed about when it comes how these boats were put together. The composite carbon chainplates eliminates the possibility of leaking. The mast is of course keel stepped, the keel bulb is lead and the stainless steel keel bolts partner with impressive backing plates. Aileron’s sail wardrobe is sizeable with both symmetrical kites and Assy’s (Aileron features a fixed bow sprit). Her racing main by Hoods has been hoisted once. Working sails are by Norths and Quantum and importantly cruising / delivery sails and storm sails are included. Instrumentation is by Simrad and includes colour chart plotter, auto-pilot, AIS, three multi displays on the mast plus cockpit displays and VHF and HF radios. There is a TV securely fitted in the saloon. A very strong stainless steel outboard engine bracket connects to the mast base – a handy feature if heading up the coast or for weekends away. Important extras were selected on commissioning including refrigeration, hot and cold pressure water, deck shower (plus internal) and the teak cockpit looks great. Very few boats this quick offer such a comfortable space below decks with full headroom, three double bunks, a fully enclosed head, a beautiful saloon table and a good sized galley. I have a soft spot for Turkey and for the Turkish people, undoubtedly some of the most warm and hospitable folk I have ever met.
