We’re sailing our Nautitech 40 with fixed keels against a much larger Catana 50 with daggerboards — and the difference between these two boats couldn’t be more interesting. The Catana 50 is bigger, longer and designed with performance in mind. With daggerboards, she can reduce leeway and point higher into the wind. Our smaller Nautitech 40, Lulu, has fixed keels and a very different philosophy of sailing. So what happens when you put them head-to-head in a real-life sailing race? Which catamaran is faster? Does size really matter? How much difference do daggerboards make compared with fixed keels? And can a smaller, cheaper cruising catamaran actually keep up with a much more expensive performance catamaran? We decided to find out. But somewhere along the way, the race became about something much bigger. Because whether you arrive an hour earlier, a few hours later — or even a day later on an ocean passage — the destination is still the destination. The turquoise water is the same.
