The SS Mataafa, launched in 1899, probably never should have left port when her captain tried to get in one last run late in the season on November 27th, 1905. Only a few hours after departing Duluth, Minnesota, she was overtaken by a massive November gale on Lake Superior. Forced to return to Duluth to seek shelter from the storm, she was only 700 feet from safety when she met disaster at the mouth of the Duluth Shipping Channel. The next 24 hours were so nightmarish that the storm of 1905 became known as the Mataafa Storm.
