Sailing the Sporades Islands Greece Sea TV Sailing Channel The Northern Sporades lie in the northwestern Aegean, just northeast of Evia — a chain of green islands, deep blue water, and naturally protected bays that make them ideal for a relaxed family cruise. Your journey usually begins in Skiathos, the main gateway. The natural harbor on the southeast coast offers excellent protection in most weather conditions, making it a comfortable and safe starting point. Depths are generally generous in the straits between Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos, allowing easy passages even for deeper-draft yachts. From Skiathos, you sail east toward Skopelos, separated by a clear and straightforward strait. The coastline here changes character — forested slopes fall steeply into the sea, creating deep waters close to shore. Many bays provide good holding, especially on the southern coast: Agnontas, Panormos and Loutraki are reliable stops when northerly winds blow. Continuing east, you reach Alonissos, quieter and more pristine. While open anchorages are fewer here, selected bays such as Mourtia (in northerlies) and Patitiri offer shelter depending on conditions.
