Sailing Life Isn’t Always Sunsets

When Everything Goes Wrong Miles from Nowhere... ⛈️⛵ Sailing isn't always sunsets and sundowners. Sometimes, it’s a grueling battle against the elements where your equipment fails exactly when you need it most. In this episode, we push toward the furthest northern reaches of the Solomon Islands, but the ocean had other plans. While attempting to anchor at Choiseul, both of our engines cut out simultaneously. Forced to drop anchor early and "limp" into our spot, we spent the next few days buried in engine bays and electrical panels amidst a relentless tropical downpour. Fixing critical electrical issues and draining water from fuel lines isn't exactly a confidence booster before a major offshore crossing, but the window was open and we had to move. With only one motor functioning, we relied on a massive 8-knot current to carry us toward our final destination: Ontong Java. Guided by pods of dolphins and masked boobies, we finally found our "fair winds." We made it to the remote atoll just as the weather turned, tucking into a precarious anchorage where the only thing between us and the Pacific Ocean is a reef that disappears at high tide.
