What began as a spectacular transatlantic race from Saint-Malo to Guadeloupe has developed into a brutal test of boats, equipment and the sailors themselves. Over the last two days, the casualty list has continued to grow. There have been serious injuries, dismastings, damaged sails and further retirements. And while some competitors are fighting simply to stay afloat and reach shelter, the leaders are approaching the Caribbean with the prospect of record-breaking performances. The weather has been anything but conventional, and the Atlantic is certainly not making life easy for the solo sailors.
