14’ Whitehall Sailboat | Taking on Water & Practicing Capsize Recovery ⛵💦

⛵💦 Well, That Wasn’t Exactly the Plan! Our 14’ Whitehall sailboat sea trial turned into an opportunity for a little hands-on learning! After heeling over a bit too aggressively and taking on water, we returned to the dock and decided it was a good time to practice capsize recovery. After all, knowing how your boat behaves when things don’t go quite as planned is an important part of becoming a confident sailor. In this video, we explore capsize recovery with the Whitehall, including some of the challenges of getting back aboard from the water. And here’s where things got interesting! Just as I was attempting to climb back into the boat, another boat was being launched from a trailer at the ramp. With activity at the launch, I wasn’t able to complete my reboarding attempt. Lesson learned? Even a planned recovery exercise can come with a few unexpected twists! While we didn’t complete the full reboarding sequence, the experience gave us an opportunity to learn more about the boat and the challenges of recovery. It’s a good reminder that practicing capsize recovery in a controlled environment, with appropriate safety precautions and plenty of room away from launch traffic, is valuable for small-boat sailors.
