Route du Rhum 2026: Three Capsizes, Major Retirements and a Race Transformed

From benign to brutal in just four days. The Route du Rhum 2026 has taken a dramatic turn. After a deceptively straightforward start off Saint-Malo, the world's biggest solo transatlantic race is beginning to show its teeth. Three multihull capsizes, major retirements and a string of setbacks have transformed the picture across the fleet. Even the offshore legends and rock stars have found themselves challenged, some have been forced to retire.. But it's not just the incidents making headlines. An awkward Atlantic weather pattern has created a tactical puzzle, with skippers choosing radically different routes, some making remarkable gains while others struggle to escape the light winds. In the Ultims, IMOCAs, Ocean Fifty trimarans and Class40s, fortunes are changing fast — and the race to Guadeloupe is far from settled. How did such a gentle beginning turn into such a demanding first four days? And what do the skippers themselves make of it all? In our second Route du Rhum 2026 race report we look at the latest developments, onboard accounts and analysis of a race that's already proving remarkably unpredictable.
