A big part of strip-built construction isn't the glue-up itself, which is a satisfyingly quick process, but is the fairing and finishing process that comes after. Steve and volunteer Grant (thanks again, Grant!) fill large imperfections and voids in the seams of the glued strips with structural epoxy, then follow up that work with planing, sanding, and skim-coating with fairing filler. With the interior surface faired, it's time for a layer of epoxy primer... the same hard-wearing, two-part TotalProtect that went on the mizzen mast a couple months ago. And there's another first this week: The first peek at a painted surface inside Arabella, color and all. Luckily, Steve notices a big problem with one of the trees that anchors the boat house before its able to cause any damage to Grandpa Dave's farm implements or to the boat house itself. Next week we'll see that tree come down, and we hope you're here for it. We hope you enjoyed this episode, and we're grateful you're with us on this journey. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in getting involved, here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells?
