One of our big goals this sailing season was to visit Danskøya, the launch site of one of the most ambitious—and tragic—polar expeditions in history. In 1897, Swedish scientist Salomon August Andrée took off from Virgohamna in a hydrogen balloon, aiming to be the first to reach the North Pole. For 33 years, their fate remained a mystery—until 1930, when their remains were discovered by chance on Kvitøya (White Island). Alongside them were documents, journals, and even undeveloped film rolls that told the story of their doomed expedition… and a hidden love story.
