Ep 25. Atlantic crossing Pt 3. Man overboard, killer whales & fish on!! (Sailing Susan Ann II)

Episode 25 Atlantic Crossing. Man Over Board, Killer Whales, Fish On… After Hayley has finished editing an episode, she gets me (Dave) to watch it and check it over… I’m sure I get more pleasure than anyone watching these back after a few months but watching this was INCREDIBLE! This must be our best episode yet!!?? What an amazing time we had crossing the Atlantic and I think this episode sums it up really well. We chilled in the sun, caught fish, ate good food and enjoyed the solitude of being in the middle of the ocean. After a couple of days of fair winds and making good way we continued heading SW trying to stay in the wind but avoid the worst of the low pressure system headed our way. Keeping an eye on the weather at least every 6 hours with our unlimited satellite data plan, it’s slow but with not much else to do I kept an eye on that storm as much as I could. This meant that we found ourselves frustratingly having to motor for 24 hours but at least we were headed in the right direction and when the storm hits we will be to the south of it. While we had fair weather, Hayley and I took the opportunity to run the crew through a surprise MOB drill. We’ve all trained and familiarised with our onboard safety gear but not in the open ocean so I thought I’d check everyone knew their roles in an unexpected drill. Plus, the water was looking so appealing that I had to finds an excuse to stop the boat and have a swim in 6,000m of water! Killer Whales!!!! Yep, we were unbelievably lucky and had a pod of 5 Orca dance and play in our bow wave. None of us could believe how lucky we were. Hayley was physically shaking because she was so scared and full of adrenaline! “Watch out Dave, they could jump on the boat and sink us!” Sheer Hayley brilliance as usual!
