Don't buy a boat unless you are into DIY! EP 44

If you own a boat, you know that you will have to fix pretty much every 'working' single part of it at some stage. DIY is the best way to learn about a boat and all of its idiosyncrasies. Thank goodness, Dan & I have been DIY-ing since we met! Paying someone to do it is very expensive and tedious to organise. Essentially you would spend a large amount of time stuck waiting in marinas or on a dry dock if you are relying on trades to answer phones, book you in and show up! We've been lucky this year to have some great trades, but have also had poor experiences over the last 18 months. Dan does the majority of the work on our boat & although our tools and spare parts weigh a tonne, they are essential in travelling safely. Replacing our fridges has been on the 'want to upgrade' list for the last couple of months of our trip. The 240V wine fridge draws a LOT of power & doesn't have flat racks & the other fridge freezes over so bad that it consumes the food at the back of the fridge, ruining many fruit and veges through frost. It's an expense we would have liked to avoid & yes, we could essentially manage without it, but eventually they'll need replacing and if we are out of the country that is going to be a nightmare task!
