Crocodiles, Malaria & Surf | Sailing Indonesia

We thought we had found the perfect anchorage in remote Indonesia… Empty surf breaks, crystal clear water, hidden mangrove rivers, and not another boat in sight. After days of heavy squalls and unpredictable weather, we sailed Stella deep into one of the most remote island chains we’ve explored so far hoping to find shelter, good surf, and a safe place to wait out the storms. And at first… it felt like paradise. We spent our days exploring the mangroves by dinghy, searching for empty reef breaks, surfing perfect waves, and fishing for food while living completely off-grid aboard our sailboat. But everything changed when our friends flew the drone over the bay… and spotted a massive crocodile swimming right beneath them. Suddenly this beautiful tropical anchorage started feeling a lot different. This part of Indonesia is not only known for crocodiles, but also dangerous squalls, strong currents, remote jungle islands, and some of the highest malaria cases in the region.
