Battling the Screecher in High Wind — A Raw Look at Solo Sailing (Ep.88)

This episode follows my solo sail from Bewick Island to the Flinders Group in Far North Queensland. The day begins in absolutely magnificent conditions — one of those rare stretches where the boat feels perfectly balanced and the ocean gives you everything you hope for. But the calm doesn’t last. As I push north, the wind builds instead of easing, leaving me seriously overpowered and needing to furl the screecher in conditions that are far from ideal. The main focus of the video shows the real, hands on struggle of solo sail handling in high wind: fighting to stop the screecher from flogging, trying to avoid tearing the sail or damaging gear, and juggling winches, timing, technique, boat speed, and the constantly rising wind. It’s a detailed look at how quickly things can escalate when you’re alone on a boat — and why watching the wind closely and acting early is so important. The journey ends with the conditions finally settling back into something beautiful again as I approach Flinders Island, giving me a moment to breathe, reflect, and appreciate the contrast between chaos and calm that defines solo sailing.
