Two years ago, after two years and three attempts, I finally arrived in the deep inlet of Uken on Amami Ōshima. Welcomed by my mate Matt Pride and the Mayor, I also made new friends: Mitsu and his colleague Kenchan. It was also Shintaro's final days with me on board Wahine. Matt took me on some adventures, including lifting the strength stone to prove my manhood! Now, having returned to Amami, I can confidently say it's my favorite cruising ground in Japan. Out of the 80 places I've moored and visited since leaving Tokyo four years ago, Amami stands out. It's an adventure island for sure. Amami Ōshima, located in Kagoshima Prefecture, is renowned for its lush subtropical landscapes, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage. The island is part of the Amami Guntō National Park and was designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2021 . Its unique blend of Ryukyuan and Japanese cultures, along with its vibrant music and traditional crafts like Oshima Tsumugi silk, make it a truly special destination .
