A Ladder, Snow & Gale Warnings: Sailing Lofoten in April | Ep. 92

Snow on the pontoon, an exposed historic coastal path, and a gale forecast in Lofoten — this episode takes us from the quiet fishing village of Nusfjord to shelter in Ballstad before crossing Vestfjorden. It is late April in northern Norway, and life aboard Polaris is shaped by fast-changing high-latitude spring weather. Before moving the boat, we explore an old working path once used by generations of local fishing communities before roads connected the villages. We expect a short hike, but it quickly becomes more demanding than we thought: snow on the trail, a fixed ladder up a rock face, boulder fields, and exposed sections protected by chains and rope. What we would call a moderate to difficult hike was once part of everyday life — a route shaped by fishing, weather, risk, and patience. After returning to the boat, we head for the protected harbour of Ballstad, a place with centuries of fishing history and a strong connection to Lofoten’s stockfish tradition. With gale-force winds, rain, and snow in the forecast, we prepare Polaris for a rough couple of days in harbour before waiting for a calmer window to cross Vestfjorden towards Nordskot. This is high-latitude sailing in Norway in spring: beautiful, quiet, unpredictable, and always ruled by the weather.
