49 - In Search of the ONE Ring: Hiking Tongariro (NZ Road Trip #2)

As you may have heard, they did a lot of filming for Lord of the Rings in New Zealand, and one of the most iconic locations was Mt. Doom. So of course we had to go see it. To get there, you have to hike what is known as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It's 19.4km of ups, downs, loose rocks, lakes, waterfalls and stellar views. Lonely Planet named it the best one day hike in the world and it was easy to see why. We had an amazing day, even if we didn't find Frodo and Sam, or the ONE ring.
