This sailing vlog documents the worst grounding we’ve ever experienced aboard our Royal Cape 500 catamaran while cruising the Florida Keys. After provisioning for three months in the Bahamas and picking up our repaired Code Zero from North Sails, we departed Key Largo and ran into immediate trouble. High winds, a narrow and poorly marked channel, equipment issues, and a wrapped prop line led to a hard aground impact on rocks — not mud or sand, but solid rock. Unlike previous soft groundings, this time we were completely stuck. Both rudders were damaged and split from the impact, leaving our liveaboard catamaran stranded in the Florida Keys and requiring a tow from Key Largo to Fort Lauderdale for repairs. In this episode of our sailing family journey: • Boom crane failure and bent aluminum shaft • Wrapping a mooring line around our prop • Navigating a tight channel in strong wind • Hitting rocks and damaging our rudders • Underwater inspection of rudder damage • Getting hard aground and unable to move • Being towed to Fort Lauderdale for catamaran repairs This is real cruising life — boat damage, grounding risks in shallow channels, Florida Keys navigation challenges, and the realities of maintaining a project boat while living aboard full-time. Journée de navigation, rebondissements de dernière minute ! Alors que je m'apprête à partir d'Arenella pour San Vito Lo Capo, je découvre que ma batterie est hors service. Il est midi et je dois trouver un marchand de batteries pour résoudre le problème, car c'est le seul jour où le vent est favorable pour cette étape. Finalement, je réussis à résoudre le problème en deux heures et je peux enfin prendre la mer. Je navigue alors sous voile, avec un vent arrière de 15 à 17 nœuds, idéal pour les voiles en papillon. This week I fly the drone over to Fort Macon and check out the area of ocean where Blackbeard's ship Queen Anne's Revenge was run aground and the subsequent wreckage was found in 1996. From there we head down Bogue Sound, go thru the Camp Lejune firing range where we anchor for the evening at Mile Hammock Bay. We then head down the coast where we navigate bridge schedules and stay for the night in Wrightsville Beach.
