The incredible students from King's College took on an unforgettable challenge during their May voyage, stepping up to lead the sail to Great Barrier Island. From passage planning and navigation to sail handling and decision-making, the students embraced every opportunity to take ownership of the journey and work together as a crew. With plenty of time on the water, they continued to build their sailing skills through hands-on learning, developing confidence in tacking, trimming sails, helming, navigation, and teamwork in a variety of conditions. Watching their confidence grow as they led the voyage was an incredible achievement. Life ashore was just as memorable, with beach games, exploring Great Barrier Island, shared meals, and plenty of laughs, creating friendships and memories that will last well beyond the voyage. A huge thank you to the students and staff for their enthusiasm, leadership, and willingness to challenge themselves throughout the adventure. Toen we aan kwamen varen vanaf het vaste land van Italië richting Sicilië, zagen we al flink wat rook boven de Etna. Dichterbij gekomen wisten we het zeker, de Etna zat in een actieve periode! Er bleek op kraters (op 2900 meter) gas- en asexplosies te zijn en lavastromen, maar op de kraters op lager niveau was er geen gevaar en die kon je bezoeken. In de avond vanaf de boot zagen we een oranje gloed bovenop de Etna en met een verrekijker was er net iets meer te zien, maar nog te weinig. Dus toen we online gingen kijken, zagen we dat op de toppen van de Etna webcams zijn geplaatst om de activiteiten te monitoren. Daar zagen we goed de lava-erupties! Ik heb er een screenrecording van gemaakt.
