We sail on the good ship Saracen, a Beneteau Oceanis 473 from 2006. Out journey started in Scotland in early 2023 and our ultimate goal is to sail around the globe …..slowly. We make these videos mostly for family and friends and to create a record of our adventures for ourselves so that we can look back at them later in life, were not in it to make money (way to hard). Thanks for taking an interest and please remember to leave a like, comment and subscribe to our channel, as this helps push the algorithm as we strive to boost our viewers. No primeiro episódio, Leo Soldo abre as escotilhas do Kaluanã e te convida pra entrar. What does it take to prep for extended passagemaking and the liveaboard lifestyle? A lot of hard work, that’s what! And plenty of time spent sourcing all the parts we either broke or need to upgrade. In this episode we focus on electrical system repairs and upgrades, installation of a new Gen3 Starlink system, and dinghy service. The idea, and one that has worked for many years, is to do every single last task on an extensive list before we even launch. This allows us to mostly relax and enjoy the season without nagging failures to deal with. I mentioned during the episode that viewers could get a discounted price on the fuel/water filter-separator, and you can use the link below to claim that.
In this episode of the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman welcome back a familiar face, Charlie Kirchofer. After making waves in Episode 133 by chronicling his journey of purchasing a sailboat in Annapolis and bringing it home to Boston with the help of a professional captain, Charlie returns to share the honest, unvarnished reality of his first full season as a boat owner. Navigating the Psychological Side of Sailing While social media is often filled with idyllic photos of sunrises and calm seas, Charlie opens up about a topic rarely discussed at the local yacht club: sailing anxiety. For those who didn't grow up on the water, the transition to being the "captain" responsible for both a vessel and its crew can be overwhelming. Charlie discusses the internal pressure to appear like a "real sailor"—trimming, reefing, and pushing offshore—while grappling with the very human urge to stay safely on land. He shares his personal strategies for distinguishing between actual mechanical or weather threats and purely mental hurdles. Key Themes in This Episode: The Responsibility Shift: The hosts and Charlie discuss the difference between being a guest on someone else's boat and being the person in charge, which often leads to "anchor anxiety" and sleepless nights. Conservative Starts: Why Charlie chose to begin his season in the calm conditions of June rather than the gusty winds of May, and how starting with two reefs in the main sail helped build his confidence. Overcoming the Learning Curve: The transition from a professional delivery trip to that first moment of realizing, "It's just me now." Sailing Strategy: How to handle the conflicting feelings of boredom in light winds versus the adrenaline of sudden gusts. Whether you are a seasoned cruiser or a new owner looking for sailing tips, this episode provides a relatable look at the mental health aspects of maritime life. Charlie’s honesty serves as a guide for anyone who has ever felt "too anxious" to leave the dock, proving that even with fear, you can still find the "cool stuff" and "gorgeous sunrises" that make cruising worthwhile. A conversation and reading to celebrate the 2025 winner of our Poetry Prize for West Coast poets, Aaron Tyler Hand. The event launches his award winning poetry book Floodchaser. Aaron will be joined by poet Kathy Fagan for a discussion about the book, and poetry reading from Floodchaser. About the book: The poetry collection Floodchaser by Aaron Tyler Hand from Portland Oregon was the winner of the 2025 Catamaran Poetry Prize for West Coast Poets. The book was selected by the judge, poet Mary Szybist, from many manuscripts submitted from poets living in California, Oregon , Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. Floodchaser unfolds through two interwoven narratives: one that revisits the biblical flood story through Ozark myth and regional lore, and another rooted in contemporary experiences of departure, grief, and irretrievable loss. Across both strands, water moves as destruction, inheritance, and transformation. Blending scripture with back-road prophecy and lived memory, the poems trace how catastrophe echoes across generations. Rather than offering redemption, Floodchaser lingers in the uneasy space between ruin and renewal, asking what it means to survive—and what survival demands of us. About the speakers: Aaron Tyler Hand is a Portland, Oregon based creative writer and literary critic with an MFA from Texas State University. He has previously been published in Poem-a-Day, San Antonio Express-News, Houston Chronicle, Porter House Review, Faultline Journal, GASHER Journal, HASH Journal, Funicular Magazine, among others. In addition to his own creative writing pursuits, Aaron volunteers his time to the prison teaching non-profit Rough Draft and hosts the poetry podcast The Personhood Project. Kathy Fagan's seventh book, The Unbecoming, is available for pre-sale with W.W. Norton and will be released in September of this year. Her sixth poetry collection is Bad Hobby (Milkweed Editions, 2022, the winner of the 2023 William Carlos Williams Award. Her previous book, Sycamore (Milkweed, 2017), was a finalist for the 2018 Kingsley Tufts Award. A 2023 Guggenheim Fellow, she's been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, an Ingram Merrill fellowship, residencies at The Frost Place, Yaddo and MacDowell, and was named Ohio Poet of the Year for 2017. Fagan's work has appeared in venues such as The Atlantic, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Poetry, The Nation, The New Republic, Kenyon Review, The Academy of American Poets Poem-A-Day, The Pushcart Prize Anthology and Best American Poetry. She co-founded the MFA Program at The Ohio State University, where she teaches poetry and co-edits the Wheeler Poetry Prize Book Series for The Journal and OSU Press.
