Hello and welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast. In this episode, Mike and I discuss the last sail of the season I did with my son Jason on Paradox, our 2009 Hunter 45 DS. We arrived at the boat on Friday evening around 9:00 PM. It was Columbus Day weekend and the weather was supposed to be nice. We dropped the dock lines on Saturday morning around 10:00 AM and it was 45 degrees, with solid overcast skies with a 10-15 knot wind from the East. It was COLD! We sailed, all the way to the Newport bridge on one tack and past Newport into Long Island Sound. Where we experienced a nice ocean swell of 5-6 feet. All of a sudden Paradox felt small. We came back North via the West passage and arrived back at Bullock Cove, in the dark, around 8:00 PM. It was approximately a 40 nautical mile trip, the longest of the season. When I spoke to them they were anchored in Elephant Bay, in the US Virgin Islands It’s a great story of selling everything, buying a boat, and embarking on a great adventure. We are so privileged that 23 Multiple Sclerosis crew have come on an incredible, challenging adventure with us on Steinlager 2. Destination Opua Marina, Bay of Islands. ETA 1600 Friday 2nd Dec. We departed the Viaduct on Monday with crew from all around the world; NZ, Aussie, UK and Turkey. Hoisted sails to Kawau Island, with great spirits all around. Wicked off wind sailing and great weather made for a fantastic first day. Tuesday we departed for Smokehouse Bay, Great Barrier Island. 30nm sail, with the MS crew on the grinders, running back stays navigating and helming. BBQ dinner on the shore at Smokehouse was the perfect way to end the day ( even roasted marshmallows). Today, we have anchored at Tutakaka. It was a challenging long sail, with all four seasons. Rain, thunder, lighting, wind changes and everyone managed to keep high spirits. It was a great day overall, with everyone overcoming challenges and proving that ANYTHING is possible.

Desiderata and I were in a battle not only with each other but with the clock. She had already stressed me out multiple times trying to just get out under the Golden Gate, but this time she knew we were heading further north around Cape Mendocino so she knew I needed to give her more attention even yet. Sure glad I did. A huge thank you to Noyo Harbor where I was able to secure a slip to work on her and let her rest while I was 5 hours away working. This boat has taught me allot of patience Thats for sure. I am hoping to get some photos off my phone for the next video of the trip. I am stuck in port due to weather so not much eles to do i suppose. Cheers.
