Another old photo CD rescued from the digital abyss. This one held a trunk restoration Ben and I tackled back in 2003. We had stumbled across a rare wall trunk—one that was clearly begging to be saved. Wall trunks were unusual pieces, built by only a handful of craftsmen, each using their own patented hinge system that allowed the trunk to open fully while sitting flat against a wall. Because of those clever mechanisms, they cost more than the average trunk. And like all trunks, they carried a history. What stories could this one tell? Who owned it? Where had it traveled? What treasures once rested inside? This particular trunk was made by Eggeman, Duguid & Company, a respected late 19th century manufacturer out of Toledo, Ohio. They were known for producing high quality canvas covered steamer trunks, and their signature “wall saver” designs. The company operated from the 1880s into the early 1900s and even offered a lifetime guarantee on their hinge system. This trunk dated circa 1890. Wall trunks are still highly sought after today, so finding one in need of rescuing felt like striking gold. This one had once been covered in green canvas, but over the years it had been painted black—again and again. The canvas was torn and missing in places, far beyond saving. With its flat lid, it had likely spent years at the bottom of cargo stacks in steamship holds, and it showed the scars: stress fractures, cracks, and begging for plenty of repairs. Restoring this trunk was a fun project, and Ben was thrilled with the result. He still treasures it today. Another trunk rescued, another trunk ready to collect new moments in time." Was für ein Ritt auf der Kieler Förde! Im Juni 2026 ging es für uns zur jährlichen Bay2Bay-Regatta der Strander Katamaransegler e.V. in Kiel-Schilksee. Die Bedingungen waren spektakulär – aber definitiv nichts für schwache Nerven: 6 Beaufort ablandiger Wind, flaches Wasser und damit perfekte Voraussetzungen für richtig schnelle Fahrten mit dem Strandkatamaran. Wegen des kräftigen Windes wagten sich allerdings nur gut zehn Boote an den Start. Ich war als Gast mit unserer Nacra 570 „Wahoo“ dabei. Mit an Bord: Mein Vorschoter, ein erfahrener Laser-Standard-Segler – allerdings zum allerersten Mal auf einem Katamaran. Nach nur einem Tag Kat-Trapez-Training am Vortag ging es direkt in die Regatta. Die Strecke führte von Kiel-Schilksee um die erste gelbe Kabeltonne in der Kieler Bucht und über den Stollergrund in der Eckernförder Bucht bis zur Untiefentonne bei Surendorf und anschließend wieder zurück nach Strande. Doch schon vor dem Start lief nicht alles nach Plan. Während ich mich um die Kameras kümmerte und filmte, überhörte ich bei der Steuermannbesprechung einen entscheidenden Halbsatz. Das sollte später noch für einige Verwirrung sorgen. Und als wäre das nicht genug, bemerkten wir erst unterwegs, dass wir die Cunningham gar nicht eingehängt hatten und das Großsegel überhaupt nicht richtig durchgesetzt war. Erst nach dem Nachtrimmen wurde die „Wahoo“ wirklich "scharf-geschaltet" – der Geschwindigkeitsunterschied war sofort spürbar. Besonders spannend wurde es an der Wendemarke in der Eckernförder Bucht: Eben noch bei satten 6 Beaufort unterwegs, gerieten wir plötzlich in ein Windloch mit gefühlt nur noch einer Windstärke. Von dort aus ging es anschließend auf einer langen Kreuz zurück Richtung Strande – vorbei an zahlreichen internationalen Teams, die bereits für die Kieler Woche trainierten. Trotz aller kleinen Pannen konnten wir uns am Ende nach Yardstick-Wertung den 🥉 3. Platz sichern – ein Ergebnis, mit dem ich ehrlich gesagt überhaupt nicht gerechnet hatte. Eine sommerliche Feierabendrunde am dritten Tag der Kieler Woche! Es ist Dienstag, 17 Uhr, und die Regattafelder auf der Außenförde sind noch voll besetzt. Bei schwachem Wind bin ich mit meinem ILCA 7 unterwegs und nehme euch mit auf ein ganz besonderes Boot-Spotting hautnah an den spektakulärsten Schiffen vor Schilksee und Strande. Zuerst geht es zur gigantischen Malizia Explorer von Boris Herrmanns Team und kurz darauf kreuzt der fliegende GC32-Rennkatamaran Malizia 1 direkt vor meiner Linse. Nach einem Abstecher zu den Lee-Tonnen der ILCA 6 Regatta bahne ich mir meinen Weg durch die beeindruckenden Schleppverbände zurück, bevor ich zum Abschluss noch den federleichten M32-Katamaran NTT DATA der Sach-Brüder unter die Lupe nehme. *📊 DIE 3 RIESEN-BOOTE IM DETAIL (DATEN & FAKTEN):* *1. Malizia Explorer (Das schwimmende Labor)* • Typ: Ein robustes, eisgängiges Forschungsschiff aus Aluminium. • Abmessungen: 26 Meter lang und 7 Meter breit. • Mast: Ein unübersehbarer Mast mit 36 Metern Höhe. • Wissenschaft: Arbeitet eng mit dem GEOMAR in Kiel zusammen für Einsätze in der Arktis und Antarktis. • Technik: Ein automatisiertes „Ocean Pack“ im Bug misst CO2-Werte, Wassertemperatur und Salzgehalt. • Liegeplatz: Das riesige Schiff liegt zur Kieler Woche direkt vor Strande. *2. NTT DATA (Der M32 der Sach-Brüder)* • Crew: Gesegelt von den bekannten Sach-Brüdern, die mehrfach die Kieler Woche gewonnen haben. • Typ: Ein M32-Rennkatamaran aus Kohlefaser mit einer Länge von 32 Fuß (knapp unter 10 Meter) und 5,5 Metern Breite. • Gewicht: Unglaubliche 500 kg – damit wiegt er fast nur die Hälfte der Malizia 1. • Mast: Die Masthöhe beträgt stolze 16,80 Meter. • Besonderheit: Das Boot besitzt keine Foils. Die herunterklappbaren Rahmenkonstruktionen an den Seiten sind Ausleger (Racks) zum Gewichtmachen.
