I am still alive! I SURVIVED direct hit from Hurricane Melissa on Epiphany! My 1972 C&C 39 hull # 24 kept me safe and alive just miles from here eyewall winds! This is a screen recording of me going live on Facebook in the middle of Hurricane Melissa! Accepted my fate when my survival was in question and death was a real possibility! I rode out Hurricane Melissa on anchor at Great Guana. I set sail at 8:30 pm from Georgetown , Exuma, Bahamas when Hurricane Melissa made that unexpected turn north toward Georgetown. Georgetown was in the path of the eye and knew I probably would not survive that I sailed away on the open Atlantic Ocean all night in what I thought were 12 to 16 ft waves. Reports later confirmed the waves were actually 18 ft to 25 ft as I sailed to get out of the path of the eyewall! Winds were already over 50 mph! I had to steer full rudder on the stops to climb each wave at an angle to prevent them from over washing the stern sinking Epiphany! Then I had to counter steer full rudder on the stops opposite direction surfing down each wave at an angle to keep from burying the bow in the next wave. If not the bow would plunge into them and water would overwashes the deck again all the way back smashing into me at the helm filling the cockpit! The waves and winds became unmanageable with Epiphany fighting for her life on each one in the night as Hurricane Melissa got closer to me! I went in Little Farmers Cut riding the 18 to 25 ft waves to get off the Atlantic Ocean! Fortunately this Inlet is deep and the waves were not breaking into sure.... called the "Rage" in Bahamas! Breaking waves will push you uncontrollably into the rocks! 40 hrs no sleep... engine running hot, bildge pump had failed.... lost all power to sailing instruments and chart plotter using Navionics on my phone for navigation I made it through the inlet. I was exhausted and beat up physically and mentally with conditions too hazardous to go on! I set my 3 anchors behind Great Guana Cay for protection from the 25 ft waves . My primary anchor was a 72 lb Mantus with 300 ft of 5/16 stainless steel chain out. My secondary anchor was a 65 lb Lamar Claw with 100ft of 3/8 chain and rope rodeMset 275 ft out. My 3rd anchor was a 65 lb CQR with 100 ft 3/8 chain and rope rode set 275 ft out. Accepted I may not survive the night I went on Facebook live to share what could be my final thoughts! I humbly share these with you!
