In the late summer of 2003 OCC member Clive Woodman set out from Plymouth in his Cornish Shrimper bound for Oslo, Norway. As soon as the first snows of winter arrived he swapped the yacht for a set of skis and spent the winter skiing 2,300 km northwards through the Norwegian to North Cape where he got back in the Shrimper to complete the circumnavigation by sea. This nice and easy hike to the top of the hill gives a beautiful view on the sourounding islands and white sand beaches around Padar island. This is usually the first stop of the tour boats taking tourists from Labuan Bajo and a day excursion covering 5 attractions. If come here on your own boat, best to visit early or after the morning tour boats are gone. You will be asked to pay a small park fee as well as a guide fee, even if guides are only stationed along the hike and not walking with you. Filmed in March 2024.

The Caves of Diros are considered to be one of the most beautiful cave systems in the world. These hidden wonders lie deep in the limestone hills of Mani and stretch for about 15 kilometers. The caves are millions of years old and are filled with breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites, formed by centuries of dripping water. We went on a boat trip through the underground lakes of the caves. The silence was impressive; the only sound we heard was the soft splash of the oar and the echo of our voices. All around us were spectacular rock formations, mystically brought to life by soft lighting. The caves were already inhabited 6,000 years ago, archaeologists have found ancient artefacts here, such as ceramics and tools. The water in the caves is a mix of fresh and salt water and remains at a constant temperature of 14°C all year round. What makes these caves so special is that you sail through the narrow passages, and sometimes even have to duck for the ceilings or walls that come very close. After every bend you are surprised by all the colors and shapes!

Day 3 of my 30-day journey through Japan’s longevity hotspots took a surprising turn. While bailing out my tender in heavy rain, lightning struck close enough to shake the boat and leave me wondering if Wahine herself had been hit. Thankfully, everything survived — including me!
