We sailed back to our own harbor “Schokkerstrand” with some stops in Marken/Volendam and in Enkhuizen At ‘Schokkerstrand’ our friend, Grieta came by, to pimp Hermann(our dinghy). The next day the kids and grandchildren came there to spend some time with us. After that lovely weekend, it was time to go back to Amsterdam to get our last vaccinations. Rented a car for a weekend and it was time to see family and friends before we untie the lines. After 6 years dreaming, doing a lot of work & preparations, it is finally time to leave. Many emotions in this period, Sad to leave family and friends behind. Scared of not knowing what will come. How will our girl / our home handle in rough seas? Did we do enough preparations? But most of all very excited to go. Thanks to Grieta for the unmistakable and easily recognizable artwork. It is not only a work of art but also a theft deterrent. We spent 3 weeks in Cascais and had a wonderful time. While we were there our friends Kim and Vin from Heron showed up. It also happened that Kim, Leontien and Vin all had their birthdays in the same week. Needless to say there was lots of partying going on. We also made new friends with Egbert of Blue Heron and Alex of Cold Feet. So the parties were even bigger and crazier. Lots of laughs. In the end we had to say goodbye to all. We left first to head to the Algarve. Heron was leaving for the Canaries before crossing to Surinam. So we won't see them for a while. Egbert and Alex were going further as well. For me if boat goes more than 5kn I always prefer sailing than motoring. And sometimes it is possible to start sailing in as low as 6-7kn of true wind speed.

Für zwei Teilnehmer des Sportküstenschifferscheins (SKS) haben wir mehr als 300 Seemeilen zurückgelegt. Von unserem Heimathafen in Stavoren ging es los über Vlieland, an den niederländischen Inseln vorbei bis nach Borkum. Der Rückweg führte uns über Ameland, Terschelling und Texel wieder Richtung Heimat. Nach der Einfahrt ins Ijsselmeer wurden wir dann überraschenderweise von der niederländischen Wasserschutzpolizei überprüft. Bei der Kontrolle gab es keine Beanstandung und wir konnten ohne weitere Vorkommnisse zurück nach Stavoren segeln und unseren Segeltörn beenden.

After spending a week in St. Lucia it was time to leave until....I turned on my engine. I was engulfed in white smoke. Oil pouring out of every hole in the boat. So...I'm stranded in St Lucia until I can resolve my engine issue. Everyone is on vacation so, to pass the time, I do some projects I've been putting off: getting a fridge and getting running water on the boat again. Getting things out of our Fridge and Freezer was like standing on your head. So we had to come up with a solution to make them more usable while utilizing all the space they had in them. Dwight comes up with a plan for adding foam to level out the bottoms and finds us some wire baskets. This is one of the many projects we are doing on the boat to get it ready to set sail. It has turned out to have fantastic results allowing us room to provision for longer sails. In this series I hope to eventually document, via time lapse, the entire trip from Delaware City, DE to Miami, FL. It's primary purpose is to allow fellow boaters the chance to scope out an area that they may be traveling thru for the first time. New tent (ORSON RAIDER XL1) at Lake Arapuni, in the Arohena Camping area on the Waikato River. Only 30 mins from home. Unfortunately there was an algal bloom in full force, so the fish were either very deep or had transferred upstream to the flowing (nicer, cleaner, cooler) water of the Waikato River. They weren't biting. The algae smells significantly which is off-putting. But it was not toxic, here, it just looks like SOUP!! People were swimming and skiing/boarding behind boats, as far as I know - NOBODY DIE! New tent is FANTASTIC! Just 1.75kg with an extra Tyvek groundsheet, so it's easily hikeable, has nice features and is well thought out. Very HAPPY with it. Its also polyester - heavier than nylon, but doesn't absorb as much water and won't sag or pucker like nylon, when wet. Important for multi day hikes! Took the MAC boat out on the lake a few times - early mornings and an evening run. No fish brought home tho' :{ Nigel had a ball - he really likes it there. Lots of pheasants in the native trees, to stalk.
