At dawn, I raise anchor and set sail aboard Mirage for a 40+ mile solo passage to West End, Bahamas - the northernmost inhabited point of the Bahamian islands and my last stop before crossing the Gulf Stream. The day starts calm and beautiful, with light wind, flat water, and those perfect Bahamas colors all around me. As the wind shifts aft, I try different sail setups: mainsail only, staysail, and eventually wing-on-wing. Mirage comes alive — 6, 7, then 8.5–10 knots as I make excellent time toward Old Bahama Bay. In West End, I clear Customs and Immigration, check out of the Bahamas, and prepare for an early start across the Gulf Stream the next morning. E dico assieme perché tunisini, francesi e italiani abbiamo mangiato dell'ottimo couscous nello stesso piatto. Assieme. Senza distinzioni di sorta. Poi cena a casa mia dove chi era di religione islamica ha bevuto acqua, gli altri vino. Senza che gli uni si meravigliassero degli altri.

Normally a squid jig is used to catch squid but lacking the right lure we developed a technique that worked just as well for us. Then we cleaned, cooked and shared them with our friends. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. In this video, I show you how I perform basic maintenance on a Mariner 3.5 HP 4-stroke outboard engine. We change the engine oil, gear case lubricant, spark plug, and the water pump impeller. I also test the engine on a custom-made wooden stand I built myself, using a bucket of water for cooling simulation.
