In this episode of Sailing Astrid the Wombat, we’re breaking down the real haul out costs and sailboat maintenance expenses involved in getting our boat ready to sail around the world. Whether you’re a future liveaboard sailor, a current boat owner, or just curious about the true costs of sailing life, this video dives deep into the dollars and details behind our latest haul out. We’ve spent months preparing our 1990 Beneteau Oceanis 430 — Astrid the Wombat — for blue water adventures, and this haul out was a major milestone. From antifouling paint to through-hull replacements, prop maintenance, and bottom cleaning, we reveal exactly what it costs to haul out a 43-foot sailboat and make her ocean-ready. We’ll walk you through each step of the process: lifting the boat out of the water, inspecting the hull, replacing worn fittings, and tackling those essential upgrades every liveaboard cruiser eventually faces. If you’ve ever wondered, “How much does it cost to maintain a sailboat?” or “What does a boatyard haul out actually involve?” — this episode has the answers. This transparent cost breakdown includes both DIY sailboat projects and professional boatyard services, showing you where you can save money and where it’s worth paying for expert help. It’s a must-watch for anyone planning long-term cruising, full-time liveaboard life, or simply trying to budget for their next sailing adventure. In this episode: – Full cost breakdown of our sailboat haul out – Sailboat maintenance and repair costs – Antifouling, through-hulls, and prop work – Preparing a sailboat for world cruising If you love boat life, sailing content, and honest insights into the cost of cruising, make sure to subscribe and join us each week as we share the highs, lows, and real numbers behind life aboard Astrid the Wombat. It's been a year and a half since our first sail in @SailingAstridTheWombat actually that means it's been a year and a half since our first sail ever. That's right a year ago we bought this Beneteau Oceanis 430 and pulled the sail up for the first time ever when we brought her home. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. We are now preparing to move onboard and to sail around the world. Join us to see the challenges as we continue to learn to sail, prepare our boat and make changes so our boat feels like a home. We are moving onboard in just a few weeks so our sailing dream is getting closer and closer. Nicole and I travel along the coast of southern Italy across the Bay of Taranto to a lovely marina in Leuca located at the southern most point on the heal of mainland Italy. We spent 5 days there waiting for a suitable weather window. Suitable is a relative term as northern winds in the Adriatic stirred the seas and made our overnight passage quite the experience. Breezy handled the rough seas better than we did and the push button sailing made easy work of the multiple sail changes necessary for me to find one that suited the sea state during our upwind slog. We arrived in Albania and performed the check in, check out process resetting the EU timeline for ourselves and more importantly, for Breezy. We spent a night outside of Durres in pleasant conditions and then made our way to the Bay of Tivat, Montenegro. Stunning is how I would describe Montenegro as we did not expect such breathtaking views or such elegant marina conditions.

Take a deep dive into the shape and features of the Manta with Tabou Boards founder and shaper Fabien Vollenweider and our team! No matter the conditions you encounter, the Manta guarantees peak velocity, outstanding control and pure slalom performance. With its remarkable acceleration, impressive top speed and rider-friendly handling, the Manta stands as the ideal choice for slalom racers and speed enthusiasts looking to dominate their local waters. Each size of the Manta range is meticulously crafted to adjust to the specific conditions found on various speed and slalom courses worldwide. The Manta 48 and 54 models, in particular, are engineered for maximum velocity, delivering exceptional control at remarkable top speeds. As you move to larger sizes, the focus shifts towards leverage and planing performance, all while maintaining the critical attributes of speed and controllability, especially during challenging jibes. The newly introduced Manta 64 combines proven attributes like the Manta 61’s outline and rocker and the 71’s bottom shape to complement your Manta range perfectly. Increased tail volume, optimized cut-outs and more tucked-in rails in the tail form the perfect blend of control, when overpowered and through jibes, top speed and power. Accelerate to unknown speeds, surpass fellow windsurfers and race to the finish line in first place with the Manta. It’s your ticket to pushing the boundaries and achieving victory. We bounce around the bays of northern Fårö just next to Gotland. What a beautiful island this is. Next we move around the corner to Lauters hamn not realising how windy it actually is with a dinghy loaded with an engine on, not a great idea. While I was in Ganges I had noticed the many interesting and sometimes surprising ways that boats are tied to the dock. One 46 sailboat had one line which was that yellow 3 strand floating braided line that deteriorates quite badly when exposed to sunlight! Seeing all boats and the various ways they were tied to the docks gave me the idea to show everyone how I tie my boat up. It is a very simple set up that allows you to easily measure the distance that the boat will move forwards, backwards as well as how far out it will move from the dock. www.lifeislikesailing.com www.facebook.com/lifeislikesailing
