No ordinary fishing: Paul Winter, owner of the traditional Essex sailing smack MARIA (CK21), explains 'stowboating', a historical method of fishing in boats for 'sprats'. Sprattus sprattus, the Latin name for 'sprats', is a type of fish sometimes sold as whitebait and is part of the herring family (Clupeidae). In the Essex village of Brightlingsea, the 'spratting boom'–the heyday of fishing for sprats–in gaff-rigged, engineless smacks was from the early 1800s until the early part of the 19th Century. MARIA is an engineless Essex smack built in 1866 by Harris Brothers in Rowhedge (UK). She's seen in this video being 'pushed' along by her smack's boat (a tender) in a slightly hurried attempt to try and 'stowboat' – fish – on the last of the flood tide. Later in this trip, as an ESE wind filled in, they repositioned the smack to a better position to use the ebb tide, around Colne Point, at the entrance to the River Colne in the Blackwater Estuary. Maria's owner, Paul Winter, re-enacts this type of fishing to honour her original design and purpose. She's kept beautifully and sailed so well, she's probably in my top five boats of all time! Big thanks to Paul Winter for a great day out again, thanks to Dave Quested for tender driving :-). If you like this video please subscribe to our YouTube channel! This wasn’t a storm… but it might have been one of the most uncomfortable passages we’ve had. Sailing from Seychelles to Tanzania, we thought we’d timed the weather well. A lighter forecast, a manageable window… and a straightforward run across the Indian Ocean. But out here, it’s not always the wind that defines a passage. Short period swell, confused seas, and constant motion turned this into a relentless few days onboard. The kind of passage that doesn’t look dramatic… but slowly wears you down, hour by hour. From hobby horsing over waves to being thrown sideways, reefing down to stay in control, and troubleshooting ongoing boat issues along the way — this is what offshore sailing really looks like. No filters. No shortcuts. Just real life at sea. After days of discomfort, we make landfall in Tanga, Tanzania, marking the start of a whole new chapter for our family — exploring mainland Africa. ⸻ ⚓️ In this episode: • Sailing the Indian Ocean (Seychelles → Tanzania) • Understanding short period swell & sea state • Life onboard during a tough passage • Reefing and sail management in uncomfortable conditions • Anchor chain troubleshooting at sea • Strategic stop near Zanzibar due to night fishing activity • Arrival in Tanga, Tanzania ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! Join Chris Beeson for a sailing review of the Sirius Yachts 35DS. The first Sirius 35 DS (DS for deck saloon) was delivered by the boutique German yard, Sirius Yachts, in 2010. We tested the just-launched hull #81 seen at the 2025 Southampton International Boat Show, and it’s likely no two are the same. There are seven different keel configurations, two-, four- and six-berth layouts. The midships berth can be an office, the technical room - a genius space designed to make maintenance a doddle - has even been converted to a sauna for one owner. The layout can be what you want it to be.

What makes Sirius Yachts stand out, however, is the attention to detail: this is clearly a yacht designed and built by people who go cruising a lot and come up with solutions when they find something that annoys them. We could make another video and still not cover everything that stands out about this yacht. Fastidiously and robustly built (cored above the waterline and areas over 40mm of solid laminate below), with the storage of a much larger yacht, this brand makes boats that their owners appreciate as second homes. Fifteen years after first testing it, Chris Beeson is still hugely impressed.

Sirius yachts will be exhibiting for the first time at Annapolis Sail Boat Show from 9th-12th October 2025
