Small Mambas is the only tribe in Malekula Island in Vanuatu that has preserved their traditions and culture in a very similar way to the YAKEL tribe of Tanna. Watch this video and enjoy as you notice their differences and similarities, as well as the incredible beauty of their simple traditions. By the way the sense of health and happiness that we perceived while exploring Vanuatu is just unbelievable. When you compare with some other more "advanced" island groups as French Polynesia or Fiji you see much less obesity and better health both mental and physical in Vanuatu.

It is that time of the Month again and we have to cross the border from Myanmar over to Thailand. Research work on Boulder Island in the Mergui Archipelago DOES continue though. We are finding a possibly invasive species of Starfish - the Crown of Thorns Starfish and also witness the first victims of a small Coral Bleach in the Area. Also we are again crossing Borders, this time not via land but by Plane, going from the beautiful Mergui Archipelago to the gateway Kawthoung and fly to Yangon in Northern Myanmar and on to Chiang Mai in Thailand. Last year we took 8 months to sail across Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. This year we are sailing the rest of Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. The journey could take up to 9 months... The issue is these are all Schengen countries and currently you are only allowed to be in the Schengen area for 90 in every 180 days. We had begun to give up hope and thought this next section of our sail would be impossible until we realized it was possible to apply for individual long stay visas for any Schengen country, and if granted your time in that country would not count against your Schengen time and in fact would help you reach that 180 days to reset your clock again. For us this country needed to be France because it was in the middle of our trip and we intended to spend 3-6 months there. We thought applying for a visa would be a smooth process, we applied at an application centre in Canada and were told to expect our passports back 15 to 45 days. Instead we got our passports and visas back 3 months later. Heres our experiences!

As we continue this series on the Sailboat Commissioning of this brand new Catalina 445 Sailing Yacht, it's important to properly commission your boat to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. In this video, we'll walk you through the steps of stepping your mast. The mast is crucial to the safety and operation of any sailboat. Ted Weyhrauch from Innovative Marine is in charge of this critical component. At this stage all the equipment that goes on the mast, the shrouds, spredders, electronics, halyards and stays have been attached to the mast. Now comes the critical process of stepping the mast. Stepping the mast is one of the most dangerous activities in the commissioning process as you are picking up the mast with a crane, navigating the mast through other boats, cars and people and setting it on deck to perfectly match the deck base while at the same time running wiring through the mast and deck and attaching the standing rig. So you will see the entire process of stepping the mast and a few extras. You will see it is not as simple as folks would make you believe. Not much today, just tinkering with the height block idea I had to raise my Luggers tiller up so that it doesn;t catch on the pad-eyes on the deck. With the wood fully oiled, I also put all the chandlery back onto the centreboard seat. I'm really chuffed with this seat now. It always looked a bit rough with the crack in it but now it's going to really finish the boat off.
