Heute haben wir keine leichte Aufgabe zu lösen. Christoph ist knapp 2 Meter groß. Und größere Menschen sind beim Segeln häufig etwas benachteiligt, denn der Großteil der Boote auf dem Markt bietet keine 2 Meter Stehhöhe. Wenn man aber lange Zeit an Bord leben möchte, ist es natürlich schön (und eigentlich auch notwendig) aufrecht stehen zu können. Das Budget von Tatiana und Christoph sind 200.000 € und wir helfen ihnen dabei, dafür das passende Segelboot zu finden. Denn überhaupt erstmal zu den Infos über die Stehhöhe in den interessanten Schiffen zu kommen, das ist manchmal gar nicht so einfach. Viele Verkäufer machen sich selbst auf Nachfrage nämlich gar nicht erst die Arbeit, die Maße zu nehmen. Und nur bei den wenigsten Inseraten findet man die Stehhöhe von vornherein vermerkt. Die Suche war also sehr spannend für uns - eine echte Aufgabe. Schließlich haben wir zwei echt gute Alternativen finden können, eine Jeanneau 47 cc und eine Contest 46. Diese beiden besichtigen und vergleichen wir in diesem Video. Eins der beiden Schiffe hat sogar voll überzeugt und wird gekauft am Ende. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. We were asked to do a walk-through of Freelance, our Pearson 36 Cutter (also informally known as a Pearson 367), so here it is the first part. It focuses on its above-deck features and our recommendations for how to best sail it. Our cutter is Hull #4. It was built in 1981, and launched on the East Coast in 1982. We bought it 1991 at Barkers Island Marina, Lake Superior, and renamed it Freelance. Since then it has serve us well as our magic carpet, which has safely taken us far and wide on the Great Lakes. Over 70 Hylas 54's were constructed from over a dozen years but only a special few were fitted with the coveted centerboard option. This feature provided the design with the ability to have draft slightly less than 6' with the board up. A great feature to cruise more of the Bahamas, Chesapeake, and shallower spots of the world than the rest of her brethren. This is a weighted board, and thanks to the Frers design means that she not only points higher to weather, but is also faster in all points of sail thanks to less wetted surface. Kismet not only featured the centerboard option but has also been also been cared for at the highest level. You will find a Hylas 54 that checks all the boxes. Cosmetics, check. Rigging, check. Mechanically, check. Structurally, check. Kismet also features the deck saloon layout, which had a sleeker deck profile then other raised saloon versions. The saloon has only one step down going forward or aft, instead of the two steps down in the raised saloon version. The listing agent has sailed and sold many Hylas's and this one ranks in the top few brokerage listings that have really stood out. The superior craftsmanship of Hylas's exclusive builder, Queen Long, is evident everywhere, from the matched grain, varnished teak interior woodwork to the extra strong fiberglass hull reinforced with Twaron, to the large cockpit, molded non-skid decks and the numerous deck storage lockers and multiple stainless opening ports. The transom has wide built-in steps to the swim platform with a drop down swim ladder. An outdoor shower compartment makes cleaning off after a snorkel or trip to the beach a cinch. Kismet's cockpit features a hard dodger with durable Clear-to-Sea panes and a hard top bimini with roll down side panels making it possible to completely enclose the area in foul weather. The six Solbian solar panels installed on top of the bimini provide ample power for daily use. Kismet's electronics, upgraded in 2017, feature touchscreen Garmin GPS monitors both in the cockpit and in the nav area below, Garmin radar, a GXM53 Sirius Weather radio, and Simrad auto pilot controllers, again in both the cockpit and nav. area. Raymarine ST 60 wind, speed and depth instruments are located in the cockpit. The boat comes loaded with communications equipment, including two VHF radios, a SSB, and Iridium Sat phone, and In-reach satellite position sending unit, AIS, and a Ubiquity WiFi receiver. At the stern, Kismet boasts a custom stainless Wells Arch, which provides a superb platform for antennas, lights and a new KVH Trac Vision satellite TV antenna. Most importantly, the arch is home to a power winch for raising the 10 ft. rigid inflatable dinghy with its new 9.9 HP Yanmar outboard, well above on-coming waves. Kismet is powered by a Yanmar 125 HP turbo diesel, which turns a PYI 3-blade feathering MAX Prop. Kismet's fuel tanks hold 323 gallons of fuel. That's nearly 1,300 miles of range under power at 6.8 knots. The shaft is also fitted with a Spurs line & net cutter for guard against Maine lobster pots. A custom fuel polishing and tank transfer system makes fuel management a snap. There are three alternators: an 80 AMP starter bank alternator, a 150 AMP House Battery alternator and a 120 AMP 24 volt battery bank alternator, which powers the water maker, windlass, and bow thruster. To provide power to all appliances and to charge the robust battery banks, there is a Kohler 9 KVW generator powered by a Yanmar engine. The solar panels minimize the need to operate the generator most of the time with peak capacity of over 35 amps. Kismet has been maintained to the highest standards all of which has been documented in extensive logs covering maintenance and equipment upgrades. Virtually all yard work has been performed by Zahnisers in Solomons, MD, one of the best yards on all the Chesapeake, and all work details and invoices are available for inspection.

We spotted a gem of a sailboat for sale in Portland, Maine. A progeny of the classic Herreshoff 12.5, this Joel White-designed Haven 12.5 is for sale for $25,000. It was built around 2009 at the Maine Maritime Museum school. It's a little easier to manage (trailerable with a centerboard) and roomy enough for a family to jump in and go for a day sail.
