OUR SCORING CATEGORIES 1) BUILD QUALITY - This encompasses both the interior and exterior and the overall quality and durability of items like deck hardware, mechanical systems, decking, windows, cabinetry and hardware, flooring, overall surfaces and materials. 2) SAILABILITY - This focuses primarily on the ergonomics of operating the vessel: the location and orientation of sail handling hardware, helm position and visibility, plus overall performance as reported (these are tried and tested boats, so there is plenty of info out there). We believe from our personal experience with many cat owner friends that these boats are capable of sailing quite well when sailed properly, especially on well-planned passages...does this boat make it easy for the crew to do so? 3) TRAMPOLINE! - We approach this with some humor because obviously young kids LOVE the trampolines, and it's Rivers' PRIMARY reason for wanting a cat. That said, the attributes of the foredeck on a cat play heavily into the enjoyment of the boat at anchor. We've been guests on many cats where the kids enjoyed not only bouncing and rolling about on the tramps, but just hanging out and doing their thing, while the adults hang out on the perimeter. This is one of those "extra" spaces on a cat which make it as much a home as a boat, especially if the kids enjoy it. 4) LIVEABILITY - This category encompasses those things that make living on a boat a joy as opposed to a chore. Overall space, intelligent layout, comfort in the lounging areas and the cabins, plentiful storage in numerous areas, a generous galley, easy access to maintenance areas, and simple dinghy lifting for night security and for underway. 5) THE X-FACTORS - This is NOT a typical review category but it should be. This is all about human connection with what is not just a boat, but possibly a home. Do we get the "feels" when we first walk inside? Can we immediately imagine life here and does it makes us smile? A lot of factors play into this and most are not quantifiable. But there are definitely boats that can tick most or even all the boxes, yet still have ZERO X-Factor. If you don't love it, it doesn't matter how perfect it may be on paper. All of these categories will be scored by Loren and I base on 5 thumbs (yeah, it's dumb, but it's also fun) then added together. This Sunseeker Predator 68 from 2017 is powered by two 1200hp strong MAN V8 diesel engines with low engines hours. She has only been privately used and constantly professionally maintained to a high standard. Nice features are her teak-topped hydraulic submersible boarding platform, a garage which opens at the push of a button housing a Williams 325 Turbojet, her ample teak-laid aft deck and the large lounge areas fore and aft. Although measuring an impressive 21.20m overall, this Predator can easily be steered and manoeuvred thanks to her bow- and stern thruster, joystick steering, Yacht controller system and dynamic positioning system. The Side Power stabilizer system will reduce the roll of the boat and makes a huge difference in comfort. Furthermore, equipped with; a generator, comprehensive Simrad navigation equipment, Besenzoni telescopic hydraulic passerelle, life raft, wetbar with grill, sink, fridge and ice maker, etc. The deck lights, speakers throughout, the elegant deck fittings and the deluxe upholstery complete the picture. The saloon of this Sunseeker Predator 68 is on the same level as the aft deck. Große Aufregung bei befreundeten Yachten, die sich bereits auf den ABC-Insel in Sicherheit wähnten und die uns nun rieten, hier auf den BVI zu bleiben. Dem Tropischen Sturm folgt jedoch mit einem Abstand von wenigen Tagen ein weiterer Tropischer Sturm, diesmal mit direktem Kurs auf die BVI. Der Abstand zwischen beiden ist zu kurz, um eben schnell nach Bonaire zu segeln. Das Warten geht also weiter. Flughafen mit Dingy Dock. In der Trellis Bay fahren wir mit dem Dingy vom Ankerplatz zum Dingy Dock und stehen nach nur wenigen Schritten vor dem Abfertigungsgebäude um meinen Sohn Tobias abzuholen. Um uns die Wartezeit zu vertreiben, schlendern wir durch eine Künstlerkolonie. Hier finden die berühmten Fullmoonparties statt. Leider hatten wir diese knapp verpasst. In der White Bay Guana Islands waren wir schon einmal und haben vergeblich versucht den Anker zum Halten zu bringen. Diesmal klappte es nach einigen Anläufen, es gibt nur wenige Sandfelder. Obwohl Guana Islands eine Privatinsel ist, begegnen die Mitarbeiter uns während unserer Wanderung ausgesprochen freundlich. Die White Bay auf Jost van Dyke ist ein Phänomen. In der Privateer Bay auf Norman Islands tauchen wir in die dortigen Höhlen und segeln anschließend weiter in die Bucht Little Harbour auf Peter Islands. Dafür haben wir uns einen Katamaran gekauft, mit dem wir Anfang März 2021 von der französischen Atlantikküste auf die Barfußroute gestartet sind. Seit vielen Jahren war eine Weltumsegelung mein (Hannes) großer Traum, den ich berufsbedingt zum Renteneintrittsalter verwirklichen wollte. Manchmal kommt das Leben aber anders als man plant. Im Frühjahr 2020 erhielt ich die Diagnose Morbus Parkinson. Plötzlich beschleunigte sich mein Leben erheblich, ich verkaufte mein Haus, löste den Hausrat auf und begann Berge an Schiffsausrüstung anzuschaffen. „Leinen los!“ war für Anfang März 2021geplant – und so kam es auch, trotz Corona. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Our weather window for the season is quickly shrinking as we make much needed repairs in Brazil, then the bad news arrives and threatens our plan to sail around Cape Horn & the rest of the world. Bluewater sailing isn't always easy. #sailing #brazil #sailingaroundtheworld We've arrived in Ilhabela Brazil and have been accepted into the country to make repairs before our plans of heading south to Cape Horn. We try to make quick work of it and even make a few friends in our short stay there. Smiles and good times are shared after our longest passage at sea. Brazil turned out to be such a beautiful surprise and we are so grateful for their hospitality. But soon we are confronted with a big decision after reading news that could alter our plans significantly. So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. As race winning regatta sailors, we already knew how to sail before we both sold up and headed out to sea, and had the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! We enjoy both solo sailing (while the other is sleeping) and doublehanded sailing (as a couple). Many people want to know if we are like Sailing la Vagabonde, well not quite. We don't have a catamaran, there are no kids (yet), and our plan from the get go was to go around the world via the southern ocean. Before we left we did watch (and still do), and were inspired by other sailing channels such as Gone With The Wynns, Nahoa, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, and well of course the original, SV Delos. Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months doing a bit of boat restoration and re-fitting in Rhode Island with solar panels, lithium batteries, a watermaker, wind power, and more and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, installing a inner forestay (cutter rig staysail) and new rudder bearings, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. We now live off grid on our sailboat, and we have sailed over 10,000 bluewater miles to date.
