When taxi dancing first appeared in taxi-dance halls during the early 20th century in the United States, male patrons would typically buy dance tickets for a small sum each. When a patron presented a ticket to a chosen taxi dancer, she would dance with him for the length of a single song. The taxi dancers would earn a commission on every dance ticket earned. Though taxi dancing has for the most part disappeared in the United States, it is still practiced in some other countries. Reichel Pugh 70 “Taxi Dancer” Taxi Dancer is an iconic bright yellow sled designed by Reichel Pugh in 1988. She has had a lot of success on the race course over the last three decades and the new high modulus carbon spar from Offshore Spars helped carry that trend forward. The high modulus carbon spar is supported with a full carbon EC6 rigging package, including below deck turnbuckles to keep windage at a minimum. The existing boom was retained and a new over-length spinnaker pole with twin fixed goosenecks supports the large modern A-sails.

The Schock 35 Class Association was founded in 1985 as a voluntary corinthian association. Its purpose is to promote the continued enjoyment of Schock 35 Class sailing yachts in fair, corinthian, one-design yacht racing, and in cruising activity, and to promote friendship among their owners and crews. The Schock 35 is a light displacement, performance sail boat. It is 35 feet in length at the deck level with a 12 foot beam. The boat has 827 feet of sail area, a masthead rig and displaces 10,000 lbs. with 4500 lbs. ballast. The interior has accommodations for six with a galley and enclosed head. The boat is speed rated the same as a J-35. The Schock 35 is manufactured by W.D. Schock Company, Corona, California, USA. A new boat race equipped costs roughly $130,000 US. Used boats range in price from USD $45,000 to $70,000. The boat is raced with a crew of 9 or 10. Windward-leeward courses with leeward gates are preferred. To control the costs of competing, the Class Rules limit the number sails aboard and regulate sail purchases. Exotic fabrics and technology, Marine Industry Racers, Racing Specialists are also controlled by Schock 35 Class Rules. Although raced in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Taiwan, the largest and most active Schock 35 fleets are along the Southern California coastline from San Diego to Santa Barbara. There are approximately fifty yachts in Southern California. The class enjoys six (6) high-point regattas a year with as many as twenty-nine (29) boats on the start line. Welcome to part 2 of our Seawind 1600 catamaran boat tour! In this episode we’re sharing details about the more technical systems on the boat. There are two 80 hp Yanmar engines installed in spacious engine rooms. The Spectra watermaker is mounted in the port engine room and makes about 15 gallons of water an hour. The most amazing thing after the obviously incredible act of making potable water is that it can run on the batteries. The starboard engine set up is the same as the port and the engine room also contains the water heater. A fabulous water heater. On to the helm stations. One of the main features that made Seawind the obvious choice for us. The helms are shaded and provide excellent visibility. We opted to install the main navigation screen on the port side. It’s amazing to seamlessly switch control from port to starboard helm, especially when docking. Let’s talk about the daggerboards. For us, this was a non-negotiable feature from the get go. We live in an area where it’s essential to be able to sail up wind. We’re not sailing with the trade winds yet, so when we want to sail to Biscayne Bay or the Keys and the wind is from the south, we can still go. Without the daggerboards that wouldn’t be possible or it would take forever. We were pointing at 40 degrees the other day and it was fabulous! The rudders are self-floating and super easy to raise. With the daggerboards and rudders up the draft is just 2’1” so we can go just about anywhere which is essential for sailing in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. A Fischer Panda generator supplements our heavy duty electrical demands when we’re off shore/on anchor. I can't believe how silent it is! And it only uses .8 gallons of diesel an hour. Talk about efficiency. We love that the anchor chain is not on deck. No unsightly rust stains for us! The anchor is so easy to deploy, with convenient foot buttons at the windlass and controls at the port helm station. The amount of energy the solar panels produce still blows my mind (800 watts in total). We’re easily able to charge the batteries in sunny/partly sunny weather and live off that energy unless we use the washer/dryer or air conditioning. Aand the bonus feature is the water collection gutter system that allows us to connect a hose to the hard bimini top to fill the water tanks with rain water! It’s seriously incredible how close I feel to nature now. We are truly filled with joy at the idea of sustainably living off grid! In this episode, we also share how our girl performs in a variety of sailing conditions. We’ve been sailing with everything from 6-27 knots of wind so far. The polar diagram shows the max hull speed is 23.1 knots at 100 degrees with about 27 knots of wind. We recently sailed from Ft. Lauderdale to Biscayne Bay and back. On the way south, the wind was about 20 knots with gusts to 27 from the north. With the higher winds we had two reefs in the main and one in the jib and averaged about 10 knots which is consistent with what the polars prescribe. On the way back up north the wind shifted to the south at about 16 knots so we pulled out the gennaker for the first time. We averaged 6 knots with the wind at about 160 degrees. A spinnaker would have definitely optimized the performance in these conditions. We recognize we have a lot to learn and we’re looking forward to sailing as much as we can. A quick little walk-through of our floating home. 'Camara' is an Ocean 80 that participated in a few of the Whitbread Round-The-World-Races back in the 80's. We salvaged her from the scrap heap back in 2015 and rebuilt/refitted her over the following 3 1/2 years without any outside labour and on a tight budget. We never had the time or budget to turn her into a 'superyacht' but our goal was all along to turn her into a comfortable cruising yacht. Having outgrown our last boat as we 'added' to the crew with two stowaways along the way, this was the perfect project boat for us to continue our dream of living a life afloat as a family. Our friends Mark and Jennifer came to visit, so we decided to film while we gave them a tour of our Seawind 1600 Catamaran so we could share it with you! A huge thanks to Mark for filming!! This is part 1 of a 2 part series. First we’re showing what the boat looks like, then we’ll share a rundown of the more technical systems in part 2. We started with one of our favorite parts of the boat, the expansive cockpit. One of the features that sold us on the 1600 are the covered helm stations and the amazing visibility they offer. A dining table fits 6 people with seating for many more in the spacious area. We then moved downstairs to show Jennifer where she’d be sleeping. The guest cabin has a bed that can be divided into two twin beds or combined into a queen. A spacious closet, cabinets, shelves and storage under the bed provide ample room for clothes, towels, and long term storage items. The windows, hatches and fans ensure guests sleep comfortably while on anchor. The guest head (bathroom) is a full bath, with electric fresh water toilet, sink, shower, mirror, fabulous lighting AND a window to watch the water run by. The v-berth in the bow is a single guest cabin with the same amenities as the stern guest cabin. We spend most of our time in the beautiful saloon, galley, nav/work station area. It’s super comfortable. We hang out, eat dinner and watch TV in the saloon on a regular basis plus the table lowers to create a bed where two adults or a number of kids can sleep. Seawind set up the nav station so it duals as a workstation. There’s a monitor mount under the desktop, a power strip in the back and ample storage room. The chair is soo comfortable. Of course it’s also a great spot for night watch or keeping watch when the weather isn’t cooperating. The main cabin is very similar to the guest cabin but has a fabulous vanity which gives me (Kristin) my own space to get ready (even blow dry my hair and put on a little makeup). Seawind recommended a hydraulic lift for the bed and it is amazing to be able to lift the bed and not have to hold it with your head while searching for stored items. The windows are pretty good too. Just kidding, they’re incredible! The main head (bathroom) is a great size, the water pressure is perfect annnd there’s a washer/dryer combo above the toilet. Life is good. The galley has a perfect triangle design between the refrigerator, stove and sink. The gas cooktop is on point and cooks just as well as the stove in our previous home. The oven doubles as a microwave which, quite frankly we use more. The storage is sufficient and we’re definitely happy we have two refrigerators. The pull out cabinets by the TV are great! We love the convenience. Overall, we couldn’t be happier with our decision. It has been an adjustment of course, to go from a 2300 square foot house to a catamaran (we’ll calculate the square footage). Cost in dollars, time, comfort, relaxation, even friends. Because, 1st-to-finish speed usually meant large, expensive, difficult to manage 40 footers. Intimidating rigs. More crew, and not always those you'd choose to cruise with. "Why seek performance, if freedom to enjoy sailing on one's own terms is lost?" Thanks to the J/35, however, this very real problem has become academic. Faster Than Grand Prix Now, you can take a quantum leap in sailing performance, with increased sailing enjoyment, without the costs. The J/35 design starts with the fastest hull shape possible, disregarding bumps used to get a good "rating". An anomaly of sailboat racing is that Grand Prix, contrary to auto racing, encourages a "low rating" rather than "maxi¬mum speed" for a given size. It gets worse. Manufacturers, trying to create a performance image, then promoted "warmed over" Grand Prix handicap racers as family cruisers. That's why a Beneteau 42, Swan 44, C&C 41 or custom, carbon/kevlar 1 tonner (39-41 ft) is no faster than a stock J/35. PHRF rates the J35 an average of 72. Among the most popular 100 designs sailing PHRF across the country, J/35 is the fastest boat you can buy. One owner reported after a two week cruise with his wife, "No other sailboat of any size passed us. We had the only Indy 500 car on the highway." If you get serious, here's what J/35 can do; 1st Overall MHS Chicago-Mackinac and Block Island Race Week 1984; 1-2-3 Overall PHRF Monhegan Race 1985; Best Boat Under 40 Feet 1984 Bermuda Race MHS; Double-handed Champion New England 1986; Ist Overall Miami-Montego Bay 1986. Under IMS (x-MHS), J/35 is considered to be the most competitive boat you can own. Seaworthiness Speed is worthless without seaworthiness! Tony Lush, veteran of 45,000 miles of open ocean sailing and 7 trans-Atlantic singlehanded crossings, chose the J/35 for the 1984 OSTAR. He beat all multi-hulls in his class except one. "A faster crossing is a safer crossing, because there's less exposure to low pressure gales and frontal systems. Less fatigue. And, I liked J/35's rugged construction and structural engineering. There are few boats of any size that can perform in such weather! Soloing trans-Atlantic in 22 days, upwind to Newport must be some kind of record, tool" Good freeboard, hull flare and reserve buoyancy in bow sections prevent submarining when surfing before huge storm seas or under spinnaker when racing. One owner reports sustained 17 knots of speed, under control, in 35 knots of wind! By minimizing weight in the ends, lowering center of gravity with a deep lead keel and avoiding hull line distortions, J/35 sails fast comfortably ... with minimum pitching and rolling. When the boat behaves better, so does the crew. Increased resistance from either is slow! Easy-to-Sail The fact that J/35 is the choice of people sailing shorthanded, also says that it's well suited for cruising. Mostly, cruising is with two people, which means that one has to sail while the other gets some sleep. A 35 footer still qualifies as "manageable" for a family crew. But, J/35 is even better because a fast 35 footer is less work than a slow one. Less sail area is needed to attain acceptable speeds. A J/35 under mainsail alone (controlled by a 6 part Harken Hexaratchet, Hall Quik-Vang, and Navtec Hydraulic Backstay) is faster than a Pilot 35 under full sail. With small jib and main, a cruising couple on a J/35 can sail circles around a Frers 36 with full racing crew using a large genoa. If it's blowing over 20 knots, it's a lot easier to drop or roll up the jib to sail with full main only, than it is to have to fight the jib and reef the main. Other keys to ease of handling and seaworthiness are balance and control. To feel J/35 accelerate in a puff of wind with hardly more than small pressure on the tiller, is one of the ultimate joys of sailing. And, so your pleasure is not interrupted by a clump of weeds or a crab pot, both keel and rudder leading edge angles (& folding prop) are designed to shed underwater snares. Cruising Yacht Interior Most are amazed that such a fast sailboat has any interior at all, let alone one with extensive teak cabinetry, teak hull sidings, and radiused cold-molded trim. The new standard J/35 comes complete with quarterberths, 8 Bomar opening ports, large head with shower, spacious forward V-Berth cabin, built-in icebox, cabinets and storage behind main settee berths, and a 28 hp diesel engine. In this episode we cover yet another classic race boat here in San Diego. Sweet little boat with some very interesting features and we show how to get kelp off your rudder woohoo From the owner Randy Ames I have had Liberty for seven years. The boat was originally purchased by a SDYC member and was called “Wow”. The boat raced quite a bit here in the 80s. The boat was moved to Santa Barbara in the 90s and competed there. The boat was called “Raptor” in those days. Like many old race boats, she fell into disrepair. The owner of the floating shipyard in Santa Barbara got the boat on a lien-sale and breathed new life into her. Santa Barbara is one of the only harbors I know with a floating dry-dock. San Diego has one for submarines on Ballast Point. The boat had the transom cut out and her forward hatch was upgraded to a round hatch which was better for spinnaker drops. The boat was repainted Americas Cup Blue with sable decks. Once the shipyard owner’s divorce was final, the boat was renamed “Liberty”. After a cosmetic refit, the shipyard owner lost interest in the boat and let her fall into disrepair again. She was purchased late one night for a very small price, as the shipyard owner was leaving town reportedly in a hurry. The new owner was a member of Santa Barbara Yacht Club. He lavished the boat with a complete of complement of new sails and high-tech rigging. The boat raced successfully in Santa Barbara for several years. The owner wanted to move up to a more challenging sport boat and put Liberty on the market. I purchased the boat in 2013. During the time I have owned her, she has been constantly upgraded. The boat is actively campaigned and has placed in several major regattas.

I personally really liked the galley, the real staircase to the fly, the flybridge was pretty cool as well. The convertible and functional design of the guest cabins was a pleasant surprise. The Master stateroom did offer a great amount of space for the size and the layout... overall I think Mikelson Yachts has done a great job of updating an already great design of the 57'. Great Owner/ operator size Yacht. Also, MIKELSON YACHTS are all semi-custom, so you can definitely create the perfect space to accommodate your own preferences. oh, Did I mention the view from the Crow's Nest / Tuna Tower??
