This Excess 15 presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021 is a prototype equipped with two Torqeedo engines of 50 kW and two BMW i3 batteries. This system comprises a pair of 50 kW electric motors combined with two high-capacity Deep Blue BMW i3 lithium-ion batteries, two generators, and a hydro-generation system for use when under sail. We were able to go aboard the boat and see the power of the motors - 10 knots at top speed - and the astonishing torque provided, even at low rpm. No more vibrations, but on the other hand, the motors are quite noisy – as is the hydrogeneration mode. During testing, the system has delivered enough electricity to power 100% of the onboard equipment at a cruising speed of 7 to 8 knots. Phase 2 of the Excess 15 E-Lab project will be to expand solar panel area.
