For some mid-week extra content we film a boat tour on a beautiful Privilege 435, David the owner shows you around his vessel that he restored from a very worn down ex charter vessel to the magnificent boat it is today. Some unique features it processes is a safe room, bullet proof door and full vessel security system. The extent of the restoration is quite substantial and we see the before and afters of how far this ex charter has come. It really gives us a new insight into what can be brought back to life and a very different avenue to the normal purchasing of intact vessels. Join our crew! We are looking for new crew to join in the future journey. Sign up to be one of our patrons for a good chance at joining us on our journey around the world. Loyalty is rewarded as Riviera responds to the call for a mid-sixty-footer and delivers with the addition of a new star to its ultra-luxury range. Impressed by the beautifully laid out helm with everything at their fingertips, Nicky Vaux and Mark Beretta remarked on just how effortless the 64 is to drive. You can read the full review in the current issue of Ocean magazine, out now. Video by Roman Liebich Photography Explore more: https://oceanmagazine.com.au/
In this episode we cover yet another classic race boat here in San Diego. Sweet little boat with some very interesting features and we show how to get kelp off your rudder woohoo From the owner Randy Ames I have had Liberty for seven years. The boat was originally purchased by a SDYC member and was called “Wow”. The boat raced quite a bit here in the 80s. The boat was moved to Santa Barbara in the 90s and competed there. The boat was called “Raptor” in those days. Like many old race boats, she fell into disrepair. The owner of the floating shipyard in Santa Barbara got the boat on a lien-sale and breathed new life into her. Santa Barbara is one of the only harbors I know with a floating dry-dock. San Diego has one for submarines on Ballast Point. The boat had the transom cut out and her forward hatch was upgraded to a round hatch which was better for spinnaker drops. The boat was repainted Americas Cup Blue with sable decks. Once the shipyard owner’s divorce was final, the boat was renamed “Liberty”. After a cosmetic refit, the shipyard owner lost interest in the boat and let her fall into disrepair again. She was purchased late one night for a very small price, as the shipyard owner was leaving town reportedly in a hurry. The new owner was a member of Santa Barbara Yacht Club. He lavished the boat with a complete of complement of new sails and high-tech rigging. The boat raced successfully in Santa Barbara for several years. The owner wanted to move up to a more challenging sport boat and put Liberty on the market. I purchased the boat in 2013. During the time I have owned her, she has been constantly upgraded. The boat is actively campaigned and has placed in several major regattas.

thanks to Jason Andrews for the J125 at sea footage https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYYQwDfvqdatqMOLxDcxhMQ The 41 foot J/125 is as close to high performance big-boat sailing one can find in a boat that’s manageable (yes, even with spinnaker) by two or three people. J/125 is like a street-legal Indy 500 car that’s easier to drive than the family sedan. Joy in ownership (and investment) is a function of time spent sailing. Time sailing depends on how easy it is to be off “on the spur of the moment” inspired by a beautiful day without having to organize 8-10 crew. Easy to Go Sailing -How easy? Throw off the cover and hoist the mainsail on slides from the cockpit using a 2:1 halyard purchase. Cast off and sail faster under mainsail alone than most boats under full canvas. Unroll the jib and fly upwind. Ready to really take off? Pull out the retractable carbon bowsprit. Hoist the spinnaker in its sock. Then from the cockpit, slide the sock up the sail to deploy the spinnaker. Trim the sheet. Hold on to your hats! To jibe, cast off one sheet and pull in the other. No need for anyone on the foredeck. To douse the spinnaker, cast off the sheet and pull the sock down over the sail from the cockpit. Stow when ready. Can you imagine the surprise of other sailors as you fly by them in 15 knots of breeze doing 10-12 knots? Getting the Gun - One of the thrills J/125 owners experience frequently is being first-to-finish and getting the gun. The local crowd ashore assumes, as in other types of races, being first across the line determines the winner. J/125 upwind target speed is 7.8 - 8.0 knots. 10+ knots downwind is a daily occurrence. In fact we know of no other boat of its type and length that’s faster. Finding crew for weeknight and Saturday races is hardly a problem when you’re first to the party. Stability & Seaworthiness- The sense of solidity and power when sailing the J/125 is explained by J/125’s extraordinary stability index of 143 degrees with a stability curve ratio of positive to negative areas of 12.5:1. This greater stability is combined with a balanced hull-form with proper amounts of reserve buoyancy forward, capable of safer & controllable higher-speed planing offshore in large waves and providing a wider steering groove upwind for sustained peak performance by average helmspersons. No IMS rule-inspired hull form can match the high 4.72 length to beam ratio of this sea-kindly yacht nor the reserve buoyancy designed into her bow sections. High length to beam ratio insures straight tracking in rough seas and light steering loads. Sailboats with fine bows and full midship sections are more difficult to balance and more likely to spin out of control in big waves. What’s Unique About J/125’s Construction? The J/125 is built to ABS offshore specifications by TPI Composites using the SCRIMP resin-infusion process. Tests conducted by the US Naval Surface Warfare Center at Carderock, MD established that the properties of laminates produced by TPI's patented SCRIMP resin-infusion process are superior to low-energy pre-pregs used by many custom boat shops and twice the strength of hand lay-up. J Boats was hesitant to enter the lightweight race boat market until something like SCRIMP/Carbon technology became available. In our judgment, SCRIMP construction greatly reduces the chances of warranty claims due to laminate failures resulting over time from pounding into waves and/or rig tension or ballast loads. SCRIMP Process- The entire laminate is placed in the mold dry. A high vacuum eliminates any air voids, then resin feed tubes draw in only enough epoxy to "wet" the laminate. This is the TPI patented SCRIMP resin-infusion process. The last step in the process is to post-cure the hull and deck at 140 degrees in a closed oven. As can be seen from the chart, SCRIMP laminate properties in terms of compression strength, flexure, and tension are twice the strength of hand lay-up and significantly stronger than low energy (vacuum bagged) post-cure pre-pregs. There is no entrained air in a SCRIMP laminate. 1% void content reduces flexural strength by 10%. Note that 50% fiber content in a carbon laminate equates to 67% carbon/33% resin by weight. See the comparison of composite properties of low cost fabrication methods in the chart above. Weight of Construction- after subtracting weight of keel plus 1000 pounds of rig, engine and hardware, J/125 at 2700 pounds is as much as 1500-2500 pounds lighter than competitive designs. Not all of this has to do with the J/125’s narrower beam. Hull & Deck Laminate Design- of the J/125 is stronger for its weight than E-Glass/epoxy laminates using slit CoreCell foam. J/125 uses epoxy with a combination Kevlar & E-Glass for the outer skin with two layers of carbon fiber (bi-axial & unidirectional) for the inner skin. The higher strength of these exotic materials allows a thinner, lighter skin than the equivalent E-Glass structure.

The Santana 3030 was designed by Nelson Marek out of San Diego, and built by W.D. Shock in Santa Ana. N/M designed the boat to compete in the MORC rule popular in the 80s. MORC strived to have designers build boats that managed racing performance with a modest and comfortable interior. N/M designed two versions, the “PC” Performance Cruiser, and the “GP” Grand Prix, with roughly 100 total boats produced. The two designs share the same hull and rig, but vary in their cabin and cockpit layouts. The GP cuts weight with a sleek and a visually clean cabin house, as well as an open racer friendly cockpit. This boat featured is hull #7, a 1983 Grand Prix. Being based in San Diego, N/M catered this boat to perform well in light and medium air and relatively flat water. The boat performed well in the early years of MORC, wining many local and offshore races. She will perform well in PHRF fleets today under light to moderate conditions. The Santana 30-30 was designed to the MORC rule. This version, the SANTANA 30-30PC = (Performance Cruiser). About 40 produced. An updated PCII version featured the following: Yanmar Diesel Engine. Chainplates were moved outboard to allow the #3 jib to be sheeted inside the shrouds. Interior has lower settee to allow for better headroom. Angle brackets were added to reinforce the bulkheads. The Grand Prix Racing edition referred to as the GP was introduced in 1983. (See: SANTANA 30-30GP) This model had a lighter deck. Ballast 2435 lbs., displacement 6000 lbs. 40 of these were built. All boats built after 1985 have elliptical keels and rudders. All versions were delivered with the same rig. Other variations: Some boats were delivered with an open transom.

Thank you Karl Robrock for the epic surf footage! The Moore 24 is a keelboat designed by Santa Cruz, California surfer/sailor, George Olson. It is one of the first ultralight displacement sailboats, entering production in 1972. This design, along with the Santa Cruz 27 and Olson 30, changed the world of performance sailing with their breakaway downwind speed. Rumor has it that George Olson was going to abandon the mold to the prototype Moore 24, Grendel, with a wild ride down a hill (in the mold of course) when it was rescued by Ron Moore and put into production. To improve on the sailing characteristics of Grendel, Moore used jacks to pry apart the original narrow-beam hull tooling, increasing the maximum beam by about one foot to 6'8". This resulted in the characteristic asymmetry of the Moore 24, where one half of the boat is about 2½" wider than the other. Despite this irregularity, Moore 24s appear to sail similarly on each tack. This fiberglass sloop is used primarily for racing and fast daysailing. In June 1975, the second hull out of the mold was sailed from Santa Cruz to Honolulu by David Ingalls and Jan Lippen-Holtz in 17 days, thus demonstrating its speed and seaworthiness. In the 1980 Singlehanded Transpac, three yellow Moore 24s were entered in the biennial race from San Francisco to Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii, sailed by Lester Robertson, Bob Boyes, and Chuck Hawley. It is said that, under the right set of conditions, a Moore 24 could beat a Transpac 52 to Hawaii, although that set of conditions ranks 3 standard deviations away from the mean. The Moore won the 1992 Pacific Cup, a race from San Francisco to Oahu, overall, as well as division and double-handed class. It has also won class firsts in other Pac Cups. In 2016 the Moore 24 Mas! won the Pacific Cup overall double handed by Mark English and Ian Rogers. The two set a new course record for the Moore 24 of 10 days 14 hours and 30 minutes with a 240 mile best 24 hour run. Construction The Moore 24 is constructed of vacuum-bagged fiberglass and balsa composite hull and deck structure with a Bruynzeel plywood interior. Of particular interest is the main bulkhead, which has a circular passage allowing access to the forepeak. The original hulls were partially cored in the bow and aft central portion of the hull. Later models had a complete balsa-cored hull. There are two quarterberths aft, and the forepeak can be outfitted with cushions to create a small double berth. The keel is constructed out of 1,050 lbs (477 kg) of lead, covered in resin and gelcoat, producing an appendage that flows seamlessly from the hull. While bolted in place, the keel is not easily removed. The rudder is a fiberglass and foam sandwich with an aluminum rudder shaft. The precision of the finishing of the rudder and keel is a testament to the skill with which these boats were built. The hull has a few design themes which make it stand out in appearance. The bow has a slight hollow, and the side view shows a reversed sheerline which maximizes interior space (such as it is). The original version had a flush deck with a small footwell for a cockpit with no coamings or seatbacks. In the late 1980s a "Sport" model was introduced with a low-profile wedge deck. Four Sport models were purchased by the University of California, Santa Cruz Sailing Program as one-design trainers. The aluminum mast has a single set of spreaders, and is supported by 1x19 standing rigging. Originally the boats had double lower shrouds, but many have been converted to single lowers to allow the mast to bend more when racing. The rig is described as 15/16ths, meaning that the jibstay attaches about 18" below the masthead. This increases the power of the adjustable backstay to control the bend of the mast, and therefore the fullness of the mainsail. While the mast and boom were sourced from a number of companies, most of the later boats had spars from Ballenger Spars [1], a local sparbuilder. Approximately 160 Moore 24s have been built. The Express 27 was greatly influenced by the Moore 24. https://www.mooresailboats.com/moore-24 www.sailinganarchy.com www.noblemanproductions.com

The Eagle 44 is designed by Dykstra Naval Architects where the designers have reaped enormous experience with recent J-class projects such as Hanuman and Rainbow. And the lines plan is equally inspired by other famous racing Js of the 1930s. The use of modern materials and a modern keel shape has resulted in a beautiful day-sailer with an enormous cockpit. Practical functionality and stylish design meet throughout the Eagle 44, with a fine balance between the various materials, white panels, mahogany, teak, stainless steel and luxury fabrics. SUPERIOR CONTROL The mahogany/stainless steel steering wheel provides excellent control and manoeuvrability while sailing or using the inboard Volvo sail-drive. The winches are positioned within easy reach of the helmsman to make singlehanded sailing possible. Combined with the large teak benches and comfortable cushions, you can to take up to eight non-experienced sailing friends with you. Phenomenal stability and a self-draining cockpit will make everyone feel safe. FUN ON THE WATER In addition to enjoying the pure sailing performance of the Eagle 44, leisure opportunities also abound. The cockpit features a large mahogany table with a sink and bar-box. Four large cockpit lockers provide ample of storage space. The views over the deck as your Eagle 44 slices effortlessly through the waves add to the excitement. For the times when you wish to escape with just the two of you, the cabin features a large double V-shaped bed. The varnished mahogany joinery and alcantare ceiling makes a classic and luxury interior. Daylight is provided through the emergency hatch which is flush mounted so as not to disturb the deck lines. The built-in toilet is out of view when not in use. A DELIGHT TO SAIL The standard 1.35 m keel gives the Eagle 44 excellent stability while also making her shallow enough to enjoy both coastal and inland waters. The synthesis of a lightweight foam core laminate with a modern keel & rudder configuration and powerful rig makes the Eagle 44 fast and a delight to sail. The white Selden mast has an in-mast car system so the mainsail is easy to hoist. The furling jib is controlled directly from the helm. For those seeking more performance, a 2.00 m deep keel can be fitted. And you can also opt to have your carbon mast stepped in combination with carbon/kevlar sails and a powerful gennaker. WELL-EQUIPPED Top quality materials are combined with excellent craftsmanship and design throughout the Eagle 44. Standard the Eagle 44 comes with an impressive ‘ready-to-sail’ equipment package. #sailinganarchy #retroboat www.sailinganarchy.com www.noblemanproductions.com

ENHANCED EMOTIONS The Lagoon 40 perfectly embodies the spirit and innovative design of Lagoon Catamarans. Sought and sailed throughout the globe, the Lagoon identity evolved into a world-renowned tribute to the 7 seas. Spacious, comfortable designs paired with uncompromising construction methods were put at the forefront of our operation -- thus, the Lagoon 40 was brought to life. With her new visual identity, the Lagoon 40 immediately stands out. While faithful to the image of Lagoon’s "DNA", a new style is born: an individual, streamlined and accomplished design depicts her large portholes and panoramic view. This creates a refined and high-performance unit, emphasized by the chamfer running from the bow to the stern. A new generation Lagoon, recognizable at first sight. In this video we did a tour of our friends 47ft narrowboat - the inside is not what you would expect! Most the art on the boat is made by Chris, check out his eBay store below: https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/challoart We’re Stephen and Kayleigh an English/ Scottish couple and along with our two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So, as a compromise (Ste wanted a boat, I was happy in the van) we decided we would purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside, the boat I texted Ste and told him I’d found us a boat. We made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. Subscribe and welcome aboard - follow us on our narrowboat journey, where we will show what its really like living on the English waterways. New video released every Monday. The Express 37 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel. It displaces 9,800 lb (4,445 kg) and carries 4,600 lb (2,087 kg) of lead ballast.[2] The boat has a draft of 7.25 ft (2.21 m) with the standard keel fitted. The later Mk II model offered an optional shallow draft keel of 5.92 ft (1.80 m).[2] The first 25 boats built were fitted with a Japanese Yanmar 2GMF two cylinder diesel engine of 18 hp (13 kW). Later boats had a three cylinder Yanmar 3GMF diesel engine of 27 hp (20 kW). The fuel tank holds 30 U.S. gallons (110 L; 25 imp gal) and the fresh water tank has a capacity of 85 U.S. gallons (320 L; 71 imp gal).[2][5] The later Mk II version has a taller rig, an updated keel and rudder and a more cruising oriented interior. Only ten were built in this configuration.[5] Operational history The Express 37 finished first, second and third in its debut at the 1985 Transpacific Yacht Race.[5][6] In a 2005 used boat review in Sailing Magazine, writer John Kretschmer concluded of the design, "The Express 37 offers exhilarating performance both on and off the racecourse. And although one-design fleets are shrinking, most 37s have a lot of speed left in them. Also, following the trend of their boats, as racing sailors get older and migrate toward more casual sailing, a logical decision might be to convert a 37 into more of a cruising boat."[5] Marine surveyor and naval architect, Jack Hornor described the design in a 2007 review, "the Express 37 will appeal to sailors interested in racing more than the dedicated cruiser; although, there is no reason these mid-1980s models can’t serve double duty for prospective buyers looking for a reasonably priced, solidly constructed racer/cruiser...Although contemporary in appearance, Schumacher’s respect for the beauty of traditional, well balanced boats is apparent in this design."[6] www.sailinganarchy.com www.noblemanproductions.com

In this #retroboat we do a #boattour of The #Swan371 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with teak wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a raised reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed fin keel. #santacruz50 #retroboat #sailinganarchy J/World is proud to have one of the most famous sleds on the West Coast in our stables, used for our offshore yacht racing programs. Hula Girl is a turboed Santa Cruz 50, designed and built the the Wizard himself, Bill Lee. Formerly named Gone With The Wind, this boat has been continually updated and is now faster than ever before. With a carbon rig and updated appendages (a "T" keel and carbon rudder designed by Bruce Nelson), there is simply no better SC50. The boat has tremendous speed potential…. she is notorious for her 2003 Coastal Cup run, where she came into Catalina Island three hours before the next Santa Cruz 50 or 52, hitting a top speed of 27.5 knots and correcting out first in front of Pegasus, TP52s, and all other Class-A boats… and see below for Roy Disney's account of the speed of these boats. Most recently, Hula Girl was Paul Cayard's personal boat. After an extensive search for a well-sailing offshore boat, one of the most accomplished sailors in the world bought Hula Girl and performed an extensive re-fit prior to the 2008 Pacific Cup. Said Paul in an email from the boat during that race: "…this thing flies! With such a long and narrow hull the boat likes to sail low and fast. At the moment we have 19 knots of wind and are surfing down waves at a comfortable 14.5 knots. It's just incredible how responsive the boat is, especially as the breeze increases." Hula Girl completed an extensive refit in 2013, which included an updated carbon rig and extensive modifications. She is the fastest SC50 afloat, and better than new! In the 2016 Pacific Cup, we shattered the Santa Cruz 50 record from California to Hawaii, making the crossing in 7 days and 20 hours, averaging nearly 300 miles/day for the full trip. She is the only SC50 in some 40 years of racing to make the trip in less than 8 days. http://sailing-jworld.com/hula-girl-offshore-yacht-racing/ www.sailinganarchy.com created filmed and edited by www.noblemanproductions.com
