Before we bought Adhara and became liveaboards we went on a sailing charter in Lanzarote for a week to try out if we could imagine living on a sailboat and how I’d feel about sailing in general. We did that in November of 2019 and a funny story about it is that I absolutely hated the first day! 😆 I couldn’t imagine why someone would actually enjoy sailing. I was scared, I got wet, I was freezing and I felt seasick for 6 hours straight and had no clue what a sheet is and what wind angle means. Apparent or true wind… wait, what? You guys can’t imagine the disappointment in Jans's eyes when I told him „no way in hell are we doing that“ 😂 Spoiler: the story has a good ending 😉 The second day we had the most beautiful weather and sailed around La Graciosa and Montaña Clara. I fell in love with the otherworldly landscape and raw beauty of these islands and enjoyed the gentle Atlantic swell, the idea of sailing as a means to explore this beautiful world we live on grew on me! On most boats it is important to have the head of the mainsail as close to the top of the mast as possible. Furthermore it must also be quick to attach and disconnect the main halyard, even with cold and wet fingers. So a shackle or a bowline are not the best solutions. The best is the method is the one shown in this video. The bobble is nice, but not strictly necessary. A double figure of 8 knot (figure of 16?) will do. The bobble or knot is never removed so you cannot lose the halyard through the mast. I usually shorten the main halyard a few cm/in at the start of each season to move the wear spots.
