Before we bought Adhara and became liveaboards we went on a sailing charter in Lanzarote for a week to try out if we could imagine living on a sailboat and how I’d feel about sailing in general. We did that in November of 2019 and a funny story about it is that I absolutely hated the first day! 😆 I couldn’t imagine why someone would actually enjoy sailing. I was scared, I got wet, I was freezing and I felt seasick for 6 hours straight and had no clue what a sheet is and what wind angle means. Apparent or true wind… wait, what? You guys can’t imagine the disappointment in Jans's eyes when I told him „no way in hell are we doing that“ 😂 Spoiler: the story has a good ending 😉 The second day we had the most beautiful weather and sailed around La Graciosa and Montaña Clara. I fell in love with the otherworldly landscape and raw beauty of these islands and enjoyed the gentle Atlantic swell, the idea of sailing as a means to explore this beautiful world we live on grew on me! In less than a fortnight both the multihull classes had completed the extended race across the Atlantic. The Ultims had been down to the equator before heading back up to the finish in Martinique while the Ocean Fifties had turned west at Cape Verde. Two classes and on the face of it two different types of competition where one seemed to deliver a dominant walk in the park, the other a full on transatlantic fist fight with boats barely out of sight of each other. Yet behind the scenes both were intense, relentless races that took teams to the edge.
