Before we bought Adhara and became liveaboards we went on a sailing charter in Lanzarote for a week to try out if we could imagine living on a sailboat and how I’d feel about sailing in general. We did that in November of 2019 and a funny story about it is that I absolutely hated the first day! 😆 I couldn’t imagine why someone would actually enjoy sailing. I was scared, I got wet, I was freezing and I felt seasick for 6 hours straight and had no clue what a sheet is and what wind angle means. Apparent or true wind… wait, what? You guys can’t imagine the disappointment in Jans's eyes when I told him „no way in hell are we doing that“ 😂 Spoiler: the story has a good ending 😉 The second day we had the most beautiful weather and sailed around La Graciosa and Montaña Clara. I fell in love with the otherworldly landscape and raw beauty of these islands and enjoyed the gentle Atlantic swell, the idea of sailing as a means to explore this beautiful world we live on grew on me! The River Class is the oldest class racing on Strangford Lough and the fleet of 12 boats which first raced at Royal Ulster Yacht Club have now moved to Strangford Lough Yacht Club (SLYC). The boats were designed by naval architect Alfred Mylne and their origins trace back to 1919 when Belfast Lough sailors were looking for a simple and elegant one-design class to race. The pre war Mylne designs have lovey long line that making them timeless beauties amongst classic boat fleets. The owner of these timeless racer maintain traditions of the early days of racing ensure that the boats continue to race hard under strict one design rules ignoring the temptation to allow modern ropes and sail clothes to alter a formula that was worked so well for over a century of racing. As classic yacht racing has become more popular it is hard to go past the River class which has so much to offer.
