This Channel Leaves No Room for Mistakes | The Narrows Gladstone | Sailing with the Jameses (Ep.173)
This week we take on one of Australia’s most thrilling tidal passages — The Narrows at Gladstone. After positioning ourselves the day before, we depart early to catch the narrow high-tide window needed to transit this incredible channel. At low tide, up to 1.6 metres of land emerges, making the passage impossible without planning (you need 1.6m + your draft in tide to get through!). Once even used as a cattle crossing, it begs the question — are we sailing a channel… or sailing over land? With mangroves just feet away and strong tidal flow pushing us along, there’s no room for mistakes. Come along as we navigate tight bends, shallow waters, and continue our full-time sailing life as a family on the Great Barrier Reef. ~ Sam, Cait & Charlie xx Chapters 00:00 – Setting the Scene 00:56 – Bug Invasion on Deck 🦟 02:22 – High Tide Window… It’s Go Time 08:50 – Boat Ramps in the Middle of Nowhere 11:12 – Are We Sailing Over a Cattle Crossing?! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Support Our Channel on Patreon Want to help keep these videos coming? We anchor in a remote creek to line up one of Australia’s most extreme tidal passages — a route that completely dries out at low tide. With squalls building and massive currents ripping through, tomorrow’s window could make or break everything.... We’re up before dawn, departing beautiful Great Keppel Island after an unforgettable stay, and heading north toward Curtis Island to position ourselves for one of the most challenging tidal routes on the Queensland coast — The Narrows. This passage is all about timing. At low tide, The Narrows completely dries out, with up to 1.6 metres of water disappearing, turning parts of the channel into a literal cattle crossing. To calculate this route, cruisers 1.6m depth plus their vessel’s draft...... and a solid nerve :) Are we sailing through a channel… or over land? In this episode, we sail 20 nautical miles while getting hit by multiple squalls, pass AROUND a pink zone on the Great Barrier Reef, and anchor in a narrow creek with a huge tidal flow as we prepare to ride the high tide through The Narrows the following morning. This is the calm before the storm — and the setup for one of our most exciting passages yet. Next episode: We take on The Narrows itself. What is antifoul and why do boats need it? 🌊⛵ Antifoul is a protective coating applied below the waterline to prevent marine growth like barnacles, weed, and slime from attaching to a boat’s hull. In this reel, we break down what antifoul does, why it’s essential for performance and efficiency, and why choosing the right type matters — especially for aluminium boats like ours. If you’ve ever wondered what’s happening under the waterline, this one’s for you. We’re mid-passage sailing south down Australia’s east coast as cyclone season approaches, making the most of the northerly winds while navigating busy coastal waters. This passage quickly proves why offshore sailing always demands vigilance, experience, and constant double-checking. What begins as a routine offshore passage soon delivers unexpected challenges, reinforcing the importance of situational awareness, visual navigation, and never relying on charts alone. As we sail through one of the largest shipping anchorages on the east coast, weaving between anchored commercial vessels, we share the real-world decisions and lessons that come with full-time cruising. From uncharted rocks and cross-checking visual references to managing traffic in high-use waters, this episode captures the reality of offshore sailing — unscripted, dynamic, and always changing. Leaving the Whitsundays is never easy — especially when this is where our sailing life began. Before heading south, we take one last look at the places that feel like home. 🌊⛵ We’re mid-passage and making the most of seasonal northerly winds to head south down the east Australian coast. But first, we rewind and revisit some of our favourite Whitsundays anchorages — places that shaped our family and our life at sea. This is where we lived until Charlie was 12 months old. Where we sold almost everything we owned and chose to live full-time on a sailboat. So coming back here always feels familiar… like returning home :) Thanks so much for watching — don’t forget to like, subscribe, and come sailing with us ❤️ Fair winds, Sam, Cait & Charlie Sailing with the Jameses --------------------------------- 🎉 WANT TO KEEP VIDEOS COMING? This island was once full of life… now it sits in complete silence. Exploring an abandoned resort as nature slowly takes everything back. In this episode of Sailing with the Jameses, we anchor in the bay of a once thriving and popular holiday destination in The Whitsundays and head ashore to explore an abandoned island resort that time — and nature — are slowly reclaiming. What was once a bustling destination built for paradise has been left behind, with empty buildings, overgrown paths, and breathtaking views standing as reminders of what once was. We last visited this place a couple of years ago, and the changes since then are impossible to ignore. Nature is quietly taking over, transforming a once-thriving resort into something both eerie and beautiful. As we hike inland, we’re rewarded with incredible views, dramatic cliff lines, hidden corners, and one of the island’s most striking natural features — a massive rock balanced in a way that feels almost unreal. If you enjoy abandoned places, island adventures, sailing life, and seeing how nature reclaims what we build, you’re in the right place :) xx --------------------------------- 🎉 WANT TO KEEP VIDEOS COMING? Sam is finally home after working overseas and that can only mean one thing… it’s time to untie the lines! We are prepping the boat for departure, slide out of our marina berth, make a last stop at the fuel wharf, and then point the bow south toward the Whitsundays. With full tanks and big smiles, we set off straight into it on an overnight sail—leaving the docks behind and chasing that offshore feeling once again. This is one of those special sailing days where everything clicks: the crew is back together, the boat is ready, and the horizon is calling. Life at the Marina While the Captain Is Away | Townsville Cruising | Sailing with the Jameses Ep.165
While Sam is away in Vanuatu, we’re holding down the fort and settling into marina life in Townsville. In this video we take you along for a look at what day-to-day life is like at the Breakwater Marina — from cruiser-friendly facilities and family-friendly attractions, to markets, cafés, swimming spots, and easy ways to keep kids entertained while living aboard. Marina stays are often short and busy for cruisers, filled with maintenance, provisioning, and catching up on life admin — so Townsville has been a great place to pause, reset, and enjoy some shore-based comforts while still living the cruising life. If you’re a cruising family, planning a stop in Townsville, or just curious what marina life looks like when one half of the crew is away, this one’s for you. --------------------------------- 🎉 WANT TO KEEP VIDEOS COMING?
