This week we sail the Torres Strait and the Tip of Australia - exploring some of the most remote and beautiful places in Australia. A couple of weeks ago, we shared some exciting news—we’d found what looked like our dream boat: an ex-commercial prawn trawler that we’d love to convert into a long-range expedition cruiser. It would take a refit, but the potential is incredible. The only catch? Insurance. So the big question remains… are we going to convert a prawn trawler into our next cruiser? We are down in Perth for a course and mixed in a family road trip holiday, with the course now completed and wrapped up -- it’s time to hit the road! We may have just found our DREAM BOAT… but there’s a BIG problem. We want to convert an ex-commercial Prawn Trawler into a Long Range Expedition Cruiser, but we have hit a roadblock with insurance. Come along as we explain what we are planning! On our road trip north from Perth back to Darwin we are touring boats - and we fell in love with some incredible trawlers coming out of a commercial fleet due to new fisheries laws. These steel-hulled vessels are 23 meters long and we absolutely fell in love with one in particular — MV Levellian. We can already see the vision: transforming her from a hard-working fishing vessel into a go-anywhere, expedition-ready liveaboard. But here’s the roadblock… INSURANCE. We’ve searched high and low, but no company seems willing to insure an ex-commercial vessel being refit into a private boat. This week we are setting off from Gove in Arnhem Land and head into some of the most remote island chains in all of Australia — the Wessels. We sail through narrow island passes, drop a line and land a shark, and even spot unmanned vessels patrolling these off-grid waters. The landscape is wild, raw, and absolutely stunning — a part of the country few people ever get to see, let alone by sailboat. We are doing an overnight passage, rounding Cape Don under a starlit sky, entering the Van Diemen Gulf and complete our journey with a smooth arrival into Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory. After crossing the mighty Gulf of Carpentaria, we’ve made landfall in Gove—also known as Nhulunbuy—on the remote coast of the Northern Territory. In this episode, we head ashore to visit our friend Rick, a town local who roasts his own coffee beans right at home. We get a behind-the-scenes look at his small-batch roasting setup, learn about the process from green bean to perfect cup, and of course—taste some of the best coffee we’ve had in ages. ☕️ From there, it’s a classic day in the life of cruisers: a trip to town, a surprisingly well-stocked Woolies with city-style prices, and back to shore for the holy grail of boat life—a hot shower.
