After discovering that Salloo’s windlass was seized, we made the decision to pivot our plans. Originally, we intended to move Salloo 400 nautical miles north from the Gold Coast to Gladstone, where we planned to complete the refit. Instead, we decided to bring our sailing catamaran, SV Emma James, 400 nautical miles south from Gladstone to the Gold Coast, and now we are headed back to Gladstone to bring the sailboat south to the Gold Coast. Before we leave Salloo, we spend some time measuring the accommodation level and starting to work out the new interior layout. The current layout has five cabins, three showers and two toilets. Our plan is to transform this into three larger cabins, two showers, two toilets, a dedicated office and laundry, and plenty of storage, including a much larger master cabin and space for guests, making the space usable for us. A couple of months ago, we bought a 62-foot former police vessel named 'Salloo' on an eBay auction. Our original plan was to bring the boat from where we bought her, on the Gold Coast, Australia, 400 nautical miles north to Gladstone, Australia, where we planned for the refit to take place! So, our original plan was simple: get Salloo ready for the 400-nautical-mile journey from the Gold Coast to Gladstone, where our sailing catamaran, Emma James, is berthed. And Gladstone is where we planned to do the refit to Salloo. After discovering and overcoming small hiccup after small hiccup during the first stages of getting Salloo ready for her trip north, we hit a problem that brought the plan to a stop..a seized anchor windlass. And without a reliable way to retrieve the heavy anchor and chain in an emergency, we couldn’t safely make the journey north. So… we made a MAJOR PIVOT. Instead of taking Salloo north, we’re going back to Gladstone (via car) to bring Emma James south to the Gold Coast. And that means the major Salloo refit is officially happening right here on the Gold Coast! We had a plan for Salloo. After buying our 60ft ex-Federal Police vessel on eBay, our next big challenge was getting her ready for the journey from the Gold Coast to Gladstone, around 400 nautical miles north, where her massive refit will begin. Welcome aboard Salloo! Ou 60ft Former Police Vessel! We bought Salloo sight unseen at an eBay auction, and now that we've had the chance to really explore her, we're discovering just how much potential is hidden inside this incredible vessel. In this episode, we're going to show you exactly why we are so excited about this boat and its upcoming transformation. From her 1-inch-thick fiberglass hull and enormous usable spaces, to her three levels, huge fuel and freshwater capacity, powerful engine room, stabiliser options and massive storage areas… the more we uncover, the more excited we become about the refit. Salloo isn't perfect, and THAT'S exactly what makes this project so exciting! We're going to be able to choose the systems, engines, stabilisers, batteries, electronics and equipment that will turn this former Federal Police vessel into the long-range family cruising boat we've always dreamed of. And the space is incredible. We're planning for three cabins, a dedicated office, a dedicated laundry and a huge lazarette/workshop with room for dive gear, water toys and all the equipment that comes with our life on the water. Before we can tackle the BIG refit, we need to know what we're working with and get a plan together. We are putting on our detective hats and uncovering Salloo's systems. We're finding, measuring, and identifying the sullage tank, freshwater tanks, clearing the hallway, lifting floorboards and start figuring out how this girl is put together. Could this be our next boat? After months of searching and inspecting vessels around Australia, we've flown across the country to Western Australia to investigate one of the most intriguing boats we've come across so far. Four years ago we traded life on land for a life at sea — moving aboard our sailboat full time when our daughter Charlie was just 12 months old. Since then our little family has sailed thousands of miles, explored remote islands and incredible anchorages, and made our boat our home. But now we're seriously asking: what comes next? Over the past few months we've been travelling to Tasmania, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, inspecting all sorts of vessels in search of the one that could take us into the next chapter of our lives. Today's episode isn't the big reveal — it's the journey to get there. We lock up our floating home, fly across Australia with Charlie in tow on her longest flight yet, and make a proper family adventure out of the trip. We explore the historic port city of Fremantle, visit the famous Fremantle Prison, wander through the harbour precinct, and watch a massive cruise ship perform a spectacular harbour manoeuvre.
