The storm tore the zipper clean off my Bimini, my rain catcher's broken, and Galopin is wide open in rain season. Fixing a boat in The Gambia is not a solo job — here's a week of bread, bass and a market hunt that took an unexpected turn. Yep, it's raining. My Bimini's off and so is my rain catcher — a wind gust tore the zipper right off, but the crew came through, and that's the thing about Lamin: you don't fix a boat alone here. You've met Akon. Now meet Karim — nine years in the village, runs errands for the sellers, and somehow always shows up with bread. Gambian tapalapa, fresh and good. When I ran out of phone credit I walked into town under a blazing sun, only to get back and find the sky pouring down on an open boat. I hate leaving Galopin alone in rain season. Then Saturday hit and the place started jumping. A generous Englishman I've never even met lends the crew a massive sound system, the guys took me out for grilled pork to keep the night going, and the rule is simple: if you've got the stamina, stay — it goes all night. If not, bring earplugs. (That CH on the plate? Switzerland. This car was once Swiss.) Karim drove me to Latrikunda Market to hunt awning fabric for some shade, because it's hot. Black vinyl in the sun? No good. We kept looking, got the full market tour, and found it — vinyl pleather, perfect colour, about ten bucks — now headed to a tailor with a design I drew myself. Before that, a haircut, because now I'm a proper egg head, look like Bruce Willis, and really stand out in a crowd here. Then we needed eats, and a meal without rice for an African is a meal without cheese for a Swiss person — so when a place was out of rice, we simply walked. Karim was right about the place that had it. Oh, and I'd love a bird on the boat. Something that can fly off into the jungle, catch a fish, and come back to ride around with me. Plus a gecko to eat the bugs. 00:00 Intro 00:26 Karim 01:04 Pouring rain 01:29 Lamin vibes 02:26 Going to market 04:24 Needed trim 04:51 Must have rice 06:12 Lamin doves 06:45 Daily bread 06:58 A bit of shade 07:26 Mom's rainbow 08:29 Au revoir Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube!
