Whale Boat Sailing Regatta, Pico Island, Azores

Pete and Eve had the great honour to crew on the Whaling Boat "Nossa Senhora de Fatima" on the largest Whale Boat Sailing Regatta of the year. Here a few words from our helmsman @ConradHumphreys “To sail in these incredible boats is a privilege and to be part of this wonderful crew is something I will never forget. 30 teams start the final race of the season here in Lajes do Pico. We raise the sails, sheet in and try to find the best route towards the first mark under the lee of Pico Mountain. Our start is perfect, and we manage to get into clear wind. A few good tacks on wind shifts and we round the first mark in the lead. It’s a perfect start, but sailing these boats in strong gusty winds requires a great team and it’s not easy. After a few little mistakes, the second place boat is gaining fast and almost passes us. We round the final mark just ahead and then a huge gust of wind powers us to the finish line.
